Sports

June 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) – Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright returned to St. Louis Wednesday for tests on his sore right elbow, although the team is optimistic the situation isn’t serious.
Wainwright became the NL’s first nine-game winner by pitching seven innings in last night’s 1-0 win at Tampa Bay. Wainwright had elbow ligament replacement surgery four years ago, but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny says the discomfort was on the other side of the elbow.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa defensive back Nico Law is leaving the program after being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct last weekend in Iowa City. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz says on Wednesday that Law has decided to transfer.

Law would have been a senior this fall. He competed for the top spot at strong safety with incumbent starter John Lowdermilk during spring practice. Law played in 13 games last season and made five tackles, though his role was likely to expand in 2014.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) – Local officials are finishing preparations for this weekend’s party celebrating the 25th anniversary of the “Field of Dreams” movie. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald says more than 11,000 people are expected the visit the field near Dyersville in northeast Iowa on Friday and Saturday. There will be several special events, including a cast reunion and question-and-answer session and a celebrity softball game.

Star Kevin Costner is expected to attend, as is Timothy Busfield, who played Costner’s brother-in-law in the film, Dwier Brown, who played Costner’s father, and Brian Frankish, the movie’s executive producer.

The movie was released in 1989, after several scenes were filmed at the rural site near Dyersville.

ISU research looks at accuracy of fitness bands

Sports

June 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Fitness monitors are growing in popularity as people who want to get in better shape seek ways to track their physical activity. Now, researchers at Iowa State University have released a study about the accuracy of those devices. Greg Welk is a professor of kinesiology at ISU. “Most of the monitors are released with little or no evidence of validity. Internally, they may do some checking and make sure that their calorie estimates are okay, but none of that is ever been reported or published,” Welk said.

The ISU study tested eight different activity monitors and found the BodyMedia FIT device was the top performer with a 9.3 percent error rating. “The BodyMedia FIT was the one that performed the best, but the other monitors performed fairly well,” Welk said. The accuracy of the eight monitors, generally worn on the wrist, were tested against a portable metabolic system.

“That’s the true gold standard measure,” Welk said. “We basically computed the energy expenditure estimates from all of the devices using their software and compared to the metabolic (system).” The ISU research is published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. This summer, Welk plans to test more activity monitors that recently arrived on the market.

“A lot of these monitors are now very attractive to people because they integrate with their cell phone and allow connection to social media,” Welk said. Most of the devices range in price between $100-$200.

Chiefs cornerback Smith cited after alleged wreck

Sports

June 10th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was cited for driving under the influence and careless driving after an officer witnessed him lose control and strike a light pole early Monday. According to a copy of the police report, Smith was attempting to make a turn in Kansas City’s Power & Light entertainment district when he struck the light pole around 12:30 a.m. The officer reported that Smith “appeared confused and began mumbling statements that I did not understand.”

Smith declined medical attention. Along with citations for driving under the influence, he was also cited for failure to provide insurance. The Chiefs said in a statement issued to The Associated Press on Tuesday that they were aware of the matter. The statement called the situation “disappointing” but declined further comment.
