DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR Nationwide points leader Chase Elliott will juggle school and racing for the final time this weekend. The 18-yeard-old Elliott will graduate from King’s Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta, Georgia, on Saturday morning and fly straight to Iowa for a qualifying session just 10 hours later.

Elliott says that while he’s excited to focus solely on racing, he also appreciated how school helped balance his life. Elliott headlines the list of Nationwide regulars set to race on Sunday at Iowa Speedway.

NEW YORK (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt will chair a succession committee to determine the process for selecting a replacement to baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. Chicago White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also is on the panel, which includes Colorado chairman Dick Monfort, Philadelphia president Dave Montgomery, Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, Pittsburgh chairman Bob Nutting and Minnesota chief executive officer Jim Pohlad.

Selig, who plans to retire in January, sidestepped a question of whether he would remain as commissioner emeritus.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals game against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up on Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of a day-night split doubleheader. The teams split the first two games of the series. The Cardinals won 4-3 Tuesday night when pinch hitter Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 12th inning and the Cubs won 17-5 on Monday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have recalled second baseman Kolten Wong from Triple-A Memphis after a four-hit, four-RBI game in the minors. Infielder Greg Garcia was optioned to Memphis on Wednesday. Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 12th inning Tuesday night for the game-winning run against the Cubs, also his first career RBI.

The 23-year-old Wong opened the season as the Cardinals’ starting second baseman. He was batting .225 when he was demoted April 27. At Memphis, he hit .344 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 15 games with five steals in five attempts. He was 4 for 5 against Round Rock on Tuesday.

Veteran Mark Ellis has been starting at second since Wong was optioned and was batting .190 with seven RBIs in 63 at-bats.

Baseball fans in Clarinda will celebrate 60 years of baseball as the A’s get ready for a new season. The A’s began as a town team back in the mid 50’s and eventually transitioned to its present day role as a summer league team for collegiate players. It has also been a family affair for manager Ryan Eberly, who’s father, Merl, skippered the team for more than 30 years. Epperly considers the A’s the town’s team, not a franchise and says only the bus drivers get paid.

The roster is made up of collegiate players from across the country. Eberly says most of the funding for the team comes from areas businesses and residents do their part by putting up the players for the summer. The A’s are part of the Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas or MINK League and Eberly says it gives the college players a taste of what professional baseball is like.

Several players who went on to star in Major League Baseball have spent a summer in Clarinda, including St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith. The A’s begin the new season at home on May 25th and the regular season schedule runs through July 22nd.

Former Iowa Hawkeye and New York Giants Football player Tyler Sash was arrested Saturday after a brief pursuit in Oskaloosa. Officials say at around 1:27-a.m. Saturday, Sash fled on a motorized scooter, after Police in Oskaloosa attempted to make a traffic stop.

During the chase, Sash dumped the scooter and fled on foot. Officers found him hiding behind a tree, but the complaint and an affidavit say Sash continued to run from Police. The officers eventually deployed a stun gun against Sash in order to make him stop. After he was tased, Sash allegedly continued to resist arrest.

Later, while in custody, Sash admitted to having six drinks within the period of an hour. He declined to take a breath test. Police charged him with Public Intoxication and Interference with Official Acts. Early Tuesday afternoon, Sash plead not guilty to both charges, and demanded a trial by jury. No trial date has been set.

Sash was a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes for three seasons, from 2008 to 2010. He played for the New York Giants beginning in 2011 and until his was cut from the team in August, 2013.
