Cards score 4 in 1st, beat Dodgers and Greinke 4-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Adams homered to cap a four-run first inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-2 Saturday to send All-Star Zack Greinke to losses in consecutive regular-season starts for the first time in nearly four years. Joe Kelly (2-1) gave up four hits, struck out four and walked one in his second outing since a three-month stint on the disabled list caused by a strained left hamstring. He retired his last 13 batters as the Cardinals won for the eighth time in 10 games.

Kelly didn’t get a decision on July 11, when he gave up six runs over three innings during the Cardinal’s 7-6 win at Milwaukee. Trevor Rosenthal, the Cardinals’ third reliever, got his 30th save in 34 chances when Andre Either grounded into a game-ending double play.

Matt Holliday leaves game against Dodgers in 5th

Sports

July 19th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth inning after appearing to get hurt.

Holliday was shaken up while diving back into second base on a pickoff attempt in the first inning after his two-run single. Holliday seemed to hit his head on the glove of shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Holliday remained on the ground for a minute, but stayed in until Peter Bourjos pinch hit for him in the fifth.

St. Louis said Holliday was removed as a precaution.

Wainwright blames self for Jeter flap

Sports

July 19th, 2014 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright is taking the blame for the flap that ensued after he said he served up pitches to Derek Jeter during the All-Star game. The 12-game winner spent part of Friday explaining his comments after the retiring Yankees shortstop doubled off him in the first inning Tuesday.  Wainwright said he made a poor choice of words and accepted responsibility for the resulting furor he says was fueled by the “Twitter-verse.”

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny thought Wainwright might be more guarded in the future, but the right-hander says he doesn’t plan on changing. Wainwright is getting extra time off after the break, and is skipping the Dodgers’ series this weekend. He is likely to pitch Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

He entered Friday second in the National League with 138 innings, first with a 1.83 ERA, and tied for the lead in wins.

Stewart back racing sprint cars after wreck

Sports

Tony Stewart was back in a sprint car on Friday night, the same series he raced in when he broke two bones in his right leg. It was unknown if this is Stewart’s first sprint car race this season because he didn’t announce when he’d compete. Stewart is available because the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is off this weekend.

Stewart’s runs were posted on Facebook and Twitter. Dirt track star Dustin Daggett tweeted a photo of Stewart’s No. 14 car at Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Michigan. Daggett also tweeted, “Raced hard in heat against Tony Stewart! But we got him, now for the Feature!”

Stewart crashed last year at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, where he flipped his 360 winged sprint car while leading with five laps remaining in the 30-lap feature. He missed the final 15 Cup races last year after breaking his leg in two places.

Holliday powers Cardinals past Dodgers, 3-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Holliday homered and doubled with three RBIs, and Lance Lynn won his third straight start for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.
Kolten Wong had two hits and scored on both of Holliday’s RBI hits for the Cardinals against the team they beat in the NLCS last fall. They have won six of eight and remained a game behind the Brewers for the NL Central lead.

A.J. Ellis had an RBI double for the Dodgers, battling the Giants for the NL West lead. They remained offensively challenged coming out of the All-Star break, totaling 10 runs the last six games. Holliday’s seventh homer, estimated at 435 feet to straightaway center, came off Dan Haren (8-7).

Lynn (11-6) gave up two runs on four hits in six-plus innings.

State releases audit of Hawkeye Express

News, Sports

July 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A state audit has recommended procedural changes for the Hawkeye Express, a train that takes Iowa football fans to Kinnick Stadium. The audit, which was released on Friday, came on the heels of the university’s firing of an athletics department accountant in November.

An audit performed by the university last year reported that revenue from ticket sales in 2011 unexpectedly dropped by an estimated $66,000. That’s despite an increase in ridership for the Hawkeye Express, which allows fans to park and ride roughly four miles to the stadium. State auditor Mary Mosiman found just over $74,000 in undeposited collections stretching across three games.

The state report recommends that school officials strengthen internal controls, reconcile ticket sales with deposits and improve cash handling procedures.
