Wacha earns 1st win, Cardinals beat Mets 9-2

Sports

June 12th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Wacha recovered from a wild start to earn his first major league win and Allen Craig hit a three-run homer for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 9-2 victory over the staggering New York Mets on Tuesday night. Matt Holliday had three hits and the NL Central leaders took full advantage of a crucial error by new Mets first baseman Daniel Murphy, who was shifted over from second after slumping Ike Davis got demoted to the minors Sunday.

David Freese extended his career-high hitting streak to 20 games, longest in the National League this season, and Wacha even knocked in a run with a groundout for his first RBI. Omar Quintanilla homered for the Mets, who gave up seven unearned runs and lost for the seventh time in eight games.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have signed wide receiver Terrell Sinkfield, a speedy rookie who said he posted an astounding 4.19-second 40-yard dash at Minnesota’s pro day during the offseason. The transaction was announced Tuesday. Terms were not disclosed. With Greg Jennings gone and Donald Driver retired, Green Bay is rebuilding its receiving corps with James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb.

Sinkfield is a 6-foot rookie out of Northern Iowa who was waived by the Miami Dolphins late last month. At Northern Iowa, he had 76 receptions for 1,097 yards (14.4 avg.) and 10 touchdowns. Sinkfield was invited to Minnesota’s pro prospect workouts and was told his fastest 40-yard dash was 4.19 and his average over three was 4.33 — still elite speed in the NFL.
