Cardinals beat Strasburg, Nationals 4-1

Sports

June 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Adams hit the go-ahead home run for the second straight game, connecting off Stephen Strasburg in St. Louis’ three-run seventh inning, and the Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 4-1 on Saturday night.

Adams snapped a 1-all tie with his sixth homer leading off the seventh, driving a 3-1 offering from Strasburg (6-5) over the wall in right-center. On Friday, he homered on his first swing since coming off the 15-day disabled list from a left calf strain, lifting St. Louis to a 1-0 victory.

The Cardinals batted around in the seventh with the help of two infield hits, a hit batter and two walks, one of them by Matt Holliday with the bases loaded against Drew Storen.

Wainwright to skip start

Sports

June 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright will skip a turn in the rotation to allow tendinitis in the back of his pitching elbow to subside. General manager John Mozeliak says it hasn’t been determined who will take Wainwright’s spot on Monday night against the Mets.

Wainwright is tied for the National League lead with nine wins

Cardinals Edge Nationals Friday

Sports

June 14th, 2014 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Lance Lynn threw eight innings of two-hit ball and Matt Adams homered on his first swing since coming off the disabled list, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

Lynn (7-4) struck out eight with no walks against the National League East leaders, who had won 10 of 13. Trevor Rosenthal added three more strikeouts in the ninth, working around rookie second baseman Kolten Wong’s two-out error on Dennard Span’s routine grounder for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Zimmermann (5-3) gave up three hits, two of them by Adams, in eight innings.

The Cardinals face the Nationals again today on KJAN with a 5:20pm pregame.

Chiefs release Flowers after voluntary workouts

Sports

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs released cornerback Brandon Flowers on Friday, shortly after finishing up three weeks of voluntary workouts in which the former starter was conspicuously absent.

Kansas City has been bumping up against the salary cap, so the move to part ways with Flowers was largely expected. He was due to make $5.25 million this season, and the former starter carried a salary cap number of $10.5 million next season.

The decision to release Flowers will save the Chiefs about $7.25 million this season and $7.5 million next season. That money could be used to help the Chiefs sign quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Justin Houston to contract extensions.

Both of them are in the final year of their contracts.

Costner, sons play catch at ‘Field of Dreams’ site

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — In Iowa for a “Field of Dreams” 25th anniversary celebration, actor Kevin Costner did the obvious. He played a little baseball Friday, this time with his two young sons. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports  hundreds of onlookers watched as Costner played catch with his boys, 7-year-old Cayden and 5-year-old Hayes. The movie fans clapped when the boys made a play, prompting Costner to note, “We don’t usually have this many people when we do this.”

Costner and other actors traveled to the field near Dyersville in northeast Iowa to celebrate the 1989 movie about an Iowa farmer who carved a baseball field out of his corn crop. About 11,000 people were expected to join in events at the site Friday and Saturday.

Des Moines lands NBA exhibition

Sports

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Harrison Barnes will be returning to the building he won two state championships in high school. The Ames native and his Golden State Warriors will play the Denver Nuggets in an NBA exhibition game October 16th at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Barnes says his first experience with the NBA was an exhibition between the same two teams back in 1993 at Veterans Auditorium. Barnes says he is thrilled with the opportunity to play in his home state.

Arena general manager Chris Connolly says they have been working on this game for several months. It will be the first time Wells Fargo Arena has hosted an NBA exhibition game since it opened in 2005. Connolly says tickets to the general public go on sale next week.
