ST. LOUIS (AP) — Madison Bumgarner struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings and Hunter Pence hit a three-run homer off Adam Wainwright as the surging San Francisco Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-4 on Friday night. Bumgarner (7-3) allowed three hits and matched a season high for strikeouts set in his previous start against Minnesota. He walked one. San Francisco has won eight of nine and owns the best record in the majors at 36-19.

Pence had two hits and scored twice. Pablo Sandoval extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single and a double, but his run of nine straight games with an RBI was snapped. Hector Sanchez and Gregor Blanco each had a two-run single for the Giants, who scored seven runs with two outs. San Francisco has scored 117 runs with two outs, tops in the big leagues.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals announced after Friday night’s game with the San Francisco Giants that they have called up top prospect Oscar Taveras from Triple-A Memphis. Taveras, a 21-year-old outfielder, was batting .325 in 49 games with Memphis with seven homers and 40 RBIs. He will take the place of Matt Adams, who was put on the disabled list with a left calf strain.

Cardinals senior vice president and general manager John Mozeliak said the move was made when they found out Adams would not be available for a couple more days. “It made sense in two ways,” Mozeliak said. “One, let Matt Adams heal, and two, it’s an opportunity to give Oscar some playing time and not have to worry about the balance of power and worry about who’s playing and who’s not.”

The Cardinals signed Taveras in 2008 out of the Dominican Republic. Before this season, Taveras was ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America. He has a career .321 average over six minor league seasons.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have juggled their bench, recalling rookie outfielder Randal Grichuk from Triple-A Memphis and optioning outfielder Shane Robinson to that club. The 22-year-old Grichuk hit his team-leading 10th home run Thursday night and is batting .315 with 32 RBIs. He’s among the PCL leaders in slugging percentage and is batting .451 against left-handers.

The Cardinals acquired Grichuk, a first-round pick by the Angels in 2009, from that team in the offseason. He was 3 for 21 in an earlier stint with St. Louis, making four starts. The 29-year-old Robinson appeared in 23 games and was batting .152 with two RBIs.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Reigning Olympic champion Gabby Douglas’ comeback is picking up speed. Next stop? Texas. Douglas will work out in front of U.S. women’s gymnastics team coordinator Martha Karolyi next week, a major step toward her return to elite competition. The 18-year-old hasn’t competed since winning a pair of gold medals, including the all-around title, at the 2012 London Olympics.

Douglas recently reunited with coach Liang Chow in Iowa after taking a seven-month break to spend time with her family in Southern California. There’s still no timetable for when she’ll be ready for competition. It’s nearly three months to nationals in Pittsburgh in late August, with the world championships in China in early October. Douglas has said she hopes to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
