AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State is in the final stages of a major renovation to the south end zone at Jack Trice Stadium, highlighting a $60 million expansion that’s set to be completed in late August.
It’s arguably the most ambitious renovation in the 40-year life of the stadium, which will soon be the third-largest in the Big 12 with a capacity of 61,000. Iowa State opens the season Sept. 5 when it hosts Northern Iowa behind what should be the biggest crowd in school history.

MIAMI (AP) — Lance Lynn came off the disabled list to pitch six shutout innings in his first outing since June 7, and the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep Thursday by beating Miami 5-1. Lynn (5-4), who had been sidelined with a strained forearm, allowed only two hits and lowered his ERA to 2.84.
Backup infielder Pete Kozma, who came into the game hitless in his past 21 at-bats, singled three times, scored twice and drove in a run for his second RBI this year. His average rose to from .093 to .140.
The sweep was the first for the Cardinals in Miami since Aug. 4-7, 2011. St. Louis (48-24) moved a season-high 24 games above .500, while Miami (30-44) fell a season-worst 14 games under .500. Miami’s Adeiny Hechavarria homered with two outs in the ninth to avert a shutout. Dan Haren (6-5) allowed four runs in six-plus innings.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Wizards selected Iowa power forward Aaron White with the 49th overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday night. White is 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds and averaged 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds as a senior in college. He adds some bulk to the Wizards, who traded up in the first round to get Kansas small forward Kelly Oubre.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Prep forward Brady Ernst says he’ll play for Iowa State next season. Ernst, who is 6-foot-9 and 215 pounds, is the first recruit for new coach Steve Prohm. He is from Clinton, Iowa. Ernst adds depth to the Cyclones front court, which is talented but thin beyond Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader.
Ernst tore the ACL in his right knee in late February. But Ernst tells The Associated Press that he’ll be able to resume basketball activities by late August at the earliest. Ernst averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds a game last season and was the state’s top-rated recruit, according to the website Prep Hoops Iowa.
Ernst had offers from a number of Missouri Valley schools, including Northern Iowa.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pavin Smith homered and drove in three runs and Brandon Waddell turned in another strong College World Series pitching performance, leading Virginia over Vanderbilt 4-2 on Wednesday night for the school’s first baseball national championship.
The Cavaliers (44-24) prevailed in the CWS finals rematch against the defending champion Commodores and brought the Atlantic Coast Conference its first title in baseball since Wake Forest in 1955.
Waddell (5-5) went seven innings and allowed only two hits after Vanderbilt (51-21) scored twice in the first. He retired the last 11 batters he faced. It was Waddell’s fifth career CWS start, and Virginia won each of them. Nathan Kirby pitched the last two innings and struck out five for his first save. John Kilichowski (3-4) took the loss.
MIAMI (AP) – Jason Heyward homered for the third consecutive game, Kolten Wong added a two-run shot and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Miami Marlins 6-1 on Wednesday night. Heyward hit a three-run homer, his ninth of the season, in the seventh to blow the game open. The Cardinals had just one hit in the first six innings against Miami starter Mat Latos (2-5), that hit being Wong’s ninth home run in the third.
Jaime Garcia (3-3) allowed one run in seven innings for the Cardinals, lowering his ERA to 1.69. Garcia singled and eventually scored in the eighth, but grimaced and began to limp shortly before crossing the plate. He came out of the game. Giancarlo Stanton had three hits, including hit his ML-leading 27th home run for the Marlins.
