Teakell’s shutdown relief key, TCU eliminates LSU in 8-4 win

Sports

June 19th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Trey Teakell pitched 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, Dane Steinhagen drove in three runs and TCU defeated LSU 8-4 in a College World Series elimination game Thursday night. The Horned Frogs (51-14), who beat the No. 2 national seed for the second time in five days, will play Vanderbilt on Friday night. TCU would have to beat the defending national champion Commodores twice to advance to next week’s best-of-three finals.

Teakell (3-1) took over for starter Mitchell Traver with one out in the fourth and the game tied at 3. The fifth-year senior retired all 13 batters he faced. Preston Guillory worked the final 1 1/3 innings. With no true No. 3 starter for LSU’s third game in Omaha, coach Paul Mainieri decided to pitch by committee and used a CWS record-tying eight. Austin Bain (2-3), the third pitcher for the Tigers (54-12), took the loss.

Cardinals chairman DeWitt: ‘Rogue’ behavior will be punished

Sports

June 19th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. is blaming “rogue” behavior on the team’s involvement in the alleged hacking of the Houston Astros’ player personnel database. DeWitt said Thursday the team was still investigating the matter but said a handful of individuals in the organization was responsible.

DeWitt and general manager John Mozeliak met with media at Busch Stadium a day after an attorney hired by the team said high-level executives were not involved in the scandal. DeWitt said he had “no knowledge” of the hacking before being informed by FBI investigators early this year.

Vargas Hits Winning HR with 2 Outs in 9th, Twins Sweep Cards

Sports

June 18th, 2015 by Jim Field

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Slumping Kennys Vargas hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 2-1 victory and a two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Joe Mauer homered for the Twins, too, tying the game in the eighth to answer Jason Heyward’s solo shot for the Cardinals in the seventh.

Vargas grounded into two double plays, ruining a bases-loaded rally on one of those with one out in the seventh inning. He more than made up for that with his game-ending drive into the right-field seats off a slow curveball from Carlos Villanueva (3-2).

Vargas, who is 5 for 27 since being recalled from Triple-A Rochester, was mobbed at home plate by his teammates.

Blaine Boyer (2-2) pitched the ninth for the victory, after eight dominant innings by Mike Pelfrey in an old-fashioned duel with Jaime Garcia.

Astros’ GM Luhnow Disputes Details Related to Hacking Probe

Sports

June 18th, 2015 by Jim Field

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow is refuting some information surrounding the FBI’s investigation into whether St. Louis Cardinals officials breached the team’s computer database.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Luhnow shoots down the theory that hackers could access Houston’s system because he didn’t change passwords. He says “that’s absolutely false,” and added that he knows the importance of “password hygiene.”

He also denies he used any of the Cardinals’ intellectual property to create Houston’s database, which they call Ground Control.

Luhnow scoffed at speculation that he was disliked in St. Louis and the hack is about revenge. He says he remains friendly with many people in the organization and that all the top executives with the team attended his wedding in 2012.

He says: “This wasn’t a bad breakup.”

Iowa St dismisses RB Martinez Syria

Sports

June 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State running back Martinez Syria has been kicked off the team. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads says Syria has been dismissed for violating team policies. Syria gained 47 yards on 20 carries as a true freshman last season. His dismissal further erodes the depth on one of Iowa State’s weakest positions.

Tyler Brown, who gained 109 yards as a freshman in 2014, and redshirt freshman Mike Warren figure to compete for the starting job.

Milone, Twins nip Cardinals 3-1

Sports

June 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tommy Milone gave up one run in seven innings and the Minnesota Twins squeaked out a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Milone (3-1) gave up five hits and struck out five and Eduardo Nunez had two hits and two RBIs to help the reeling Twins, who had lost seven of their previous eight games.

Carlos Martinez (7-3) gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits and struck out six in 6 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, who are embroiled in a federal investigation into allegations that members of the team’s baseball operations hacked into the Houston Astros’ personnel database.

The Cardinals had two runners on with no outs in the ninth, but Glen Perkins struck out Mark Reynolds and Randal Grichuk and got Yadier Molina to ground out to improve to 23 for 23 in save tries.
