Former coach denies allegations he choked 7-year-old boy

TREYNOR, Iowa (AP) – An assistant high school basketball coach has denied that he choked a 7-year-old boy at the man’s residence in western Iowa. The Daily Nonpareil reports that Michael Doner is charged with assault causing injury. The 40-year-old is due back in court on July 9th. Doner’s attorney, Chad Primmer, told the newspaper that Doner “denies the allegations and looks forward to his day in court.”

Authorities say the boy was choked on May 21 at Doner’s home in Treynor. Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker says that when authorities interviewed the boy, marks were found on his neck. Doner has told athletic officials at St. Albert Catholic Schools in Council Bluffs that he would not be part of the school’s boys basketball coaching staff this coming season.

Cards’ Garcia ruled out for Thursday, no DL move expected

Sports

July 2nd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jaime Garcia has been pushed back again and won’t start today (Thursday) for the St. Louis Cardinals because of what the pitcher calls a left groin strain. The left-hander and the team are confident he won’t be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Garcia could start early next week in Chicago against the Cubs.

Manager Mike Matheny said the replacement for the opener of a four-game series with the Padres will be a minor league call-up. Garcia was injured rounding third base scoring a run in the eighth inning of his last start on June 24 in Miami. The team had previously referred to the injury as a groin cramp.

Garcia is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts coming off thoracic outlet surgery to correct a nerve issue in his shoulder that cost him most of the previous two seasons.

Quintana paces White Sox to 7-1 win over Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Melky Cabrera homered to back a strong outing from Jose Quintana, and the Chicago White Sox pulled away late to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night in a game interrupted by three rain delays.

The Cardinals lead the majors with a 51-26 record and had a six-game winning streak entering the two-game series but were held to a single run in each of the two losses to Chicago. They were 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position, including seven hitless at-bats Wednesday.

Quintana (4-7) allowed a run in six innings with eight strikeouts to win for the first time in four starts. The lefty worked at least six innings for the 10th straight time, none of the starts lasting longer than seven innings. Cabrera homered in the sixth to give the White Sox the lead. Tyler Flowers’ two-run homer highlighted a five-run ninth for the White Sox, who had dropped 12 of 16 entering the series.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Chicago White Sox outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in 11 innings Tuesday night on a home run by Tyler Flowers. Chris Sale matched a major league record by striking out at least 10 in eight straight starts. Sale struck out 12 in eight innings Tuesday. The lefty tied the mark set by Pedro Martinez in 1999 with Boston.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed right-handed reliever Matt Belisle on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation. Right-hander Marcus Hatley’s contract was purchased from Triple-A Memphis. Reliever Jordan Walden was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster.

HOUSTON (AP) — Dallas Keuchel allowed seven hits in eight innings to lead the Houston Astros a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. The performance comes after Keuchel threw a six-hit shutout in a win over the New York Yankees in his previous start. Keuchel struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter to lower his ERA to 2.03.

Former ISU Hoops Star Vroman Dies

Sports

June 30th, 2015 by Jim Field

Former Iowa State basketball star Jackson Vroman died Monday from injuries sustained in a car accident according to multiple reports. He was 34 years old.

Vroman, a native of Bountiful, Utah, was one of the best junior college basketball players in the nation when he signed with Iowa State in 2002 after an All-American career at Snow Community College (Utah).

Vroman earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors and made the Big 12 All-Newcomer team as a junior when he averaged 12.5 points and 9.4 rebounds.

What made the 6-10, 220-pound Vroman stand out was his relentless approach to rebounding. The center never gave up in the paint, fighting off defenders and out working opponents for caroms.

In his senior season (2003-04), Vroman became the first Cyclone to lead the league on the glass in 24 years when he averaged 9.6 rebounds per game. He also averaged 13.9 points to earn second-team all-conference accolades and lead the Cyclones to the NIT semi finals.

Vroman’s career 9.5 rpg average ranks ninth all-time in school history and his 55.8 percent clip from the field ranks third in ISU’s record book.

Following graduation Vroman was the 31st pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. He played two NBA seasons with the Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Hornets. He continued to play professionally overseas until 2014.

Vroman was also a member of the Lebanese National Team.
