AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State running back Martinez Syria has been kicked off the team. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads says Syria has been dismissed for violating team policies. Syria gained 47 yards on 20 carries as a true freshman last season. His dismissal further erodes the depth on one of Iowa State’s weakest positions.
Tyler Brown, who gained 109 yards as a freshman in 2014, and redshirt freshman Mike Warren figure to compete for the starting job.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tommy Milone gave up one run in seven innings and the Minnesota Twins squeaked out a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Milone (3-1) gave up five hits and struck out five and Eduardo Nunez had two hits and two RBIs to help the reeling Twins, who had lost seven of their previous eight games.
Carlos Martinez (7-3) gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits and struck out six in 6 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, who are embroiled in a federal investigation into allegations that members of the team’s baseball operations hacked into the Houston Astros’ personnel database.
The Cardinals had two runners on with no outs in the ninth, but Glen Perkins struck out Mark Reynolds and Randal Grichuk and got Yadier Molina to ground out to improve to 23 for 23 in save tries.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — An attorney for the St. Louis Cardinals says executives of the team were not involved in the hacking of the Houston Astros’ player personnel database. The Cardinals hired the Dowd Bennett firm to handle an internal inquiry several months before this week’s disclosure that the FBI is investigating whether the team hacked into the Astros computer system.
Jim Martin, an attorney for the firm, tells The Associated Press he is “100 percent confident” the case does not involve people like Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak and Chairman Bill DeWitt.

A proposal to create an early signing period in college football so high school players can make their verbal commitments to schools binding in mid-December has been tabled for one year. At a meeting of the Collegiate Commissioners Association in Asheville, North Carolina, FBS leaders decided not to vote on a proposal to have a 72-hour signing period for high school prospects that would line up with the dates junior college players can sign.
The early signing period would have gone into effect this season and started Dec. 16th.
Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher says the commissioners wanted to let the new NCAA football oversight committee make a comprehensive review of recruiting before a decision is made on early signing.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hours after a federal investigation into possible computer hacking by the Cardinals became public, St. Louis extended its winning streak to five by beating the Minnesota Twins 3-2 behind Michael Wacha’s pitching and Mark Reynolds’ two-run single.
Before the game, manager Mike Matheny said he was in the weight room when he first learned of the investigation into whether the Cardinals had hacked Houston’s computer database. The Cardinals then completed a soggy homestand in which three games were delayed and another against Kansas City was postponed until July 23.
St. Louis is 43-22 overall and 26-7 at home, both tops in the major leagues, and matched a franchise best by reaching 43 wins in 64 games.
Minnesota has lost seven of eight.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee’s decision to release veteran Shonn Greene kicks the Titans’ youth movement at running back into full gear.
Greene, a former Iowa Hawkeye standout, had stayed away from the Titans’ offseason program until the start of the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. He showed up, passed his physical and then was released with one year left on his contract at $3.25 million.
That leaves the Titans with Bishop Sankey and Dexter McCluster among the running backs with NFL experience in that group.
They drafted running back David Cobb and fullback Jalston Fowler in May, and Antonio Andrews was undrafted last year.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt says all the young running backs have looked good this offseason and that is why the Titans feel this is the direction to go right now.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Major League Baseball says it is cooperating with a federal investigation into an illegal breach of the Houston Astros’ internal database after a report that the St. Louis Cardinals were responsible for the hack.
The New York Times, citing unidentified law enforcement officials, reported Tuesday that the FBI and Justice Department are investigating whether Cardinals’ front-office officials were behind the effort to steal player information.
MLB said the Astros’ “baseball operations database” was breached, but declined further comment until the federal investigation is completed. The U.S. attorney in St. Louis, Richard Callahan, says he is unaware of the investigation. Messages seeking comment from FBI officials in St. Louis, Houston and Washington were not returned.
The Cardinals and Astros both confirmed they are cooperating with the investigation but declined further comment.
