KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs released wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers and offensive lineman Kelvin Palmer and signed offensive lineman Tavon Rooks before the start of their mandatory minicamp Tuesday.
Rogers, once a college standout for Tennessee, was kicked off the team for disciplinary issues and transferred to Tennessee Tech. But he’s been unable to make it in the NFL, catching just 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns while bouncing through three franchises. In May, Rogers spent one day in jail after pleading guilty in Indianapolis to drunken driving.
The release of Palmer and the signing of Rooks, a former Kansas State player, is basically a swap of players deep on the depth chart.
The John Deere Classic near the Quad Cities has always given aspiring pros a chance to compete in a PGA Tour event and this year is no different. Tournament director Clair Peterson has given sponsor exemptions to three of the country’s top collegiate golfers. Peterson says giving young players an early break pays off for the tournament down the road.
Jordan Spieth was given an exemption in 2012 which started the relationship. He came back in 2013 and won the tournament. Now he’s coming back as Masters Champion in 2015, when everyone knows he could be accepting appearance fees to go overseas. Peterson says they believe that “Developing these relationships surely pays off.”
Spieth is one of the favorites heading into this week’s U-S Open. Bryson DeChambeau is the NCAA champion out of SMU. Brian Campbell was a standout at Illinois while Lee McCoy is the world’s fourth ranked amateur out of Georgia. More of the big names on the PGA Tour are playing the John Deere Classic each year but Peterson says it remains important for them to give young players a chance to compete.
In addition to Spieth several other big names were given sponsor exemptions at the beginning of their careers to play in the tournament including Tiger Woods, Zach Johnson and Jason Day. The first round of the John Deere Classic is July 10th.

Members of the Exira-Elk Horn Kimballton Board of Education, Monday evening, began the formal process of arranging a shared Wrestling program with the Audubon Community School District. Superintendent Dean Schnoes said both districts have experienced a decline in the number of students participating in the program, so it makes sense to look at combining their Wrestling programs.
Schnoes said the Exira-EHK Board approved the agreement contingent upon the details meeting the Board’s satisfaction. He says those details will be worked out and a contract possibly signed by September. The main objective he says, is to do what’s right for the kids, and the District.
Schnoes said patrons and students of both districts have gotten accustomed to each other, so sharing a wrestling program seems like a natural fit. He says a lot of times when the two districts are at a match, they tend to want to sit together. Their coaches know each other, combining the districts would allow for a complete team to be formed, which is something Athletic Directors look for when it comes time for a tournament.
The arrangement, if approved by both districts, may mean the combined team may temporarily move up to Class 2-A, but because both teams are losing numbers, they may go back to 1-A next year.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Yadier Molina homered and John Lackey worked eight strong innings for the St. Louis Cardinals, who won their fourth in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Mark Reynolds connected three pitches ahead of Molina in the fourth, giving the Cardinals back-to-back homers.
Randal Grichuk tripled, singled and scored for St. Louis, which is 42-21 overall and 25-7 at home — both major league bests. The Cardinals have won 15 of 20. Twins rookie Byron Buxton tripled for his first career hit with one out in the eighth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Dozier that cut the gap to a run. Buxton also slammed into the wall, but didn’t stay down long, after just missing a running catch on Grichuk’s triple leading off the third.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The defending NCAA baseball champs have opened their College World Series schedule with a victory. Freshman Jeren Kendall’s two-run homer off Tyler Peitzmeier in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Vanderbilt a 4-3, come-from-behind victory over Cal State Fullerton. The Commodores were down 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when heavy thunderstorms Sunday night forced the suspension of the game.
Virginia is 2-0 after Brandon Waddell limited Florida to a pair of hits in seven innings of a 1-0 verdict over the Gators. Robbie Coman supplied the game’s lone run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Arkansas was eliminated from the series when Jacob Heyward singled in the bottom of the ninth to give Miami a 4-3 win over the Razorbacks. Heyward opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth, scored the go-ahead run in the seventh and delivered the walk-off hit after Willie Abreu doubled off the center-field wall.
Des Moines, IA – The Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control has voted to adopt a nine game regular season schedule and 16-team qualifier field for all football classes in the playoffs starting in 2016. The change means a reduction from 32 teams who currently qualify for the postseason in each class.
The schedules for this fall and the 2015 regular season and playoffs remain unchanged as previously published at www.iahsaa.org.
The move comes after review of the current playoff system which allows fewer days of rest and recovery between each game in the postseason. In a nod toward player safety and risk-minimization, the IHSAA has been looking at several options.
“Today’s actions put in place a scenario for the football postseason which allows for one week between games,” said Alan Beste, IHSAA Executive Director. “The driving force behind this decision is player safety and keeping the best interest of our students at the forefront.”
At their meeting on April 29, the IHSAA Board of Control had a discussion regarding the football start date and schedule beginning with the 2016 season. The Board considered many options at that meeting, but decided to gather further input from the IHSAA membership through the IHSAA Representative Council, Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association (IHSADA), and Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA).
It was decided the best way to have a collaborative discussion among those groups was to provide information regarding various options and have a large-group discussion at the June 15 IHSAA Representative Council meeting. The move came about as an attempt to give the parties involved time to seek input from their constituents and be ready to have meaningful discussion at the IHSAA Representative Council.
At today’s meeting, representatives from the IHSADA and IFCA discussed the issue amongst the IHSAA Representative Council. Also present for the discussion were members of the IHSAA administrative team as well as the IHSAA Board of Control.
Following the Representative Council meeting, the IHSAA Board of Control convened and in a unanimous vote decided to retain nine regular season games and move toward a 16-team playoff qualifier structure.
Football is the largest high school participation sport in Iowa among males with 20,630 participants, according to the 2013-2014 IHSAA annual participation survey.
