Feline fight: No Rally Cat as St. Louis Cardinals mascot

Sports

August 25th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The Rally Cat won’t be spending time frolicking as the mascot of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The frisky feline ran onto the field during a game with the Kansas City Royals on Aug. 9 and was a good luck charm. Yadier Molina hit a grand slam on the next pitch after the cat was retrieved by a groundskeeper.

The four-month-old tabby disappeared and the St. Louis Feral Cat Outreach captured it the next day. The Cardinals announced plans to adopt the cat, host a Rally Cat Appreciation Day on Sept. 10 and let it live in the clubhouse.

But the nonprofit balked, saying the team wanted to exploit the cat rather than take care of it.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cardinals dispute that claim, but they don’t want to get into a cat fight.

The group is looking for someone to adopt the kitten after it gains more weight.

University of Iowa athletics to give university $2 million

News, Sports

August 25th, 2017 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – University of Iowa officials say its athletics department will give $2 million to the school this year.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the announcement comes over a year after university President Bruce Harreld asked the department to find ways to use its revenue to further the institution’s core academic goals.

The funds are less than 2 percent of the athletic department’s nearly $120 million budget and will be spent on recreational services, diversity programming and student life.

The department also gave the university $2 million last year.

The state’s three public universities have lost more than $30 million due to funding reductions by state lawmakers.

Harreld has asked the state Board of Regents to increase tuition by 7 percent a year for the next five years to counteract the cuts.

Asuaje, Margot lead late rally as Padres beat Cardinals 4-3

Sports

August 25th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Asuaje’s RBI single in the ninth inning gave San Diego the lead and Jose Pirela’s sacrifice fly proved to be the game-winner as the Padres rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Thursday night.

Asuaje’s hit, his third of the game, off Zach Duke scored Jabari Blash. Neither Duke nor Sam Tuivailala (3-2) recorded an out in relief in the ninth for a Cardinals bullpen that surrendered 12 runs in seven innings during the series.

Luis Perdomo gave up two runs in six innings, tying Jhoulys Chacin for the Padres team lead with 13 quality starts. Perdomo, who was claimed off the Cardinals farm system by Colorado in the 2015 Rule 5 draft, was lifted for pinch-hitter Allen Cordoba, whom the Padres plucked from the Cardinals’ system in the 2016 Rule 5 draft.

Kirby Yates (3-4) pitched the Padres out of an eighth-inning jam and Brad Hand earned his 12th save in 16 attempts as the Padres won their first series at St. Louis since April 2011.
