AMES, Iowa (AP) – It wasn’t the smoothest of openers for Iowa State. But it went down as a relatively comfortable win for the Cyclones – one they won’t look down on after last year’s opening debacle against Northern Iowa. Jacob Park threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns and Iowa State, aided by a pair of interception returns for TDs, beat the FCS Panthers 42-24 in the season opener for both teams Saturday.

David Montgomery ran for 82 yards and two scores for the Cyclones, who scored 21 straight points to hold off the Panthers just a year after losing to Northern Iowa. “I thought it was a good team win. Was it perfect? No,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “The thing I was most impressed with was that we didn’t panic.”

Willie Harvey (12 yards) and Kamari Cotton-Moya (18 yards) returned Eli Dunne picks for scores in the first quarter. Montgomery then closed the first half with an 8-yard TD run and opened the second with a 3-yard score to make it 28-10.

The Cyclones essentially put it away midway through the third quarter on a 9-yard TD pass from Park to Marchie Murdock that put them ahead 35-10. Iowa State’s Allen Lazard caught eight passes for 108 yards to set a new school record for career receptions with 178. Dunne was 23 of 38 passing for 259 yards with three TDs and three interceptions.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs have placed linebackers Tamba Hali and Dadi Nicolas on the physically unable to perform list and released veteran running back C.J. Spiller.

Kansas City also traded offensive lineman Isaiah Battle to Seattle on Saturday for a conditional 2018 draft pick and placed running back Spencer Ware and cornerback Ashton Lampkin on injured reserve.

Hali, a five-time Pro Bowl selection, is dealing with balky knees. Nicolas is coming off a knee injury last season. Spiller was the biggest surprise among 30 players who were cut. Not only did he appear rejuvenated after a long history of injuries, his release left the Chiefs with rookie Kareem Hunt and Charcandrick West as the only running backs on their roster.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw three touchdown passes in his first career start and Iowa beat Wyoming 24-3 on Saturday, its 16th win in its last 17 openers. Noah Fant caught two of those TD tosses for the Hawkeyes (1-0), who held the Cowboys (0-1) to just 59 yards rushing on 30 tries.

Stanley’s first career touchdown throw, which went to Fant on fourth-and-2, put Iowa ahead 7-3. Stanley connected with Fant for a 27-yard score following a bizarre muffed punt by Wyoming, and he hit Nick Easley from 45 yards out to give the Hawkeyes a 21-3 edge midway through the third quarter.

Josh Allen was 23 of 40 passing for 174 yards and two picks for the Cowboys, whose inability to run the ball left Allen without much space to work with. Allen threw an interception deep in Iowa territory with 11:32 left, and he threw another one right to lineman Brady Reiff after being blitzed with 4:36 left.

Akrum Wadley rushed for 116 yards for Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — This year’s annual Iowa pheasant and quail population survey looks bad — a 30 percent drop in the average statewide pheasant population and a 23 percent decline for quail. But state officials say they believe the numbers are misleading.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials believe that unusually dry weather during the survey taken in August is to blame for the skewed numbers.

Upland wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says surveyors need heavy dew the mornings of the survey to get accurate numbers. That’s because it’s the dew that causes hens to move their broods from cover to gravel roads to dry off. If there’s no dew, the brood stays hidden from surveyors.

Bogenschutz says he expects similar numbers this year to 2016’s pheasant season, when hunters harvested about 250,000 roosters.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Dexter Fowler hit a leadoff triple in the ninth inning and scored the go-ahead run on Kolten Wong’s single moments later, Stephen Piscotty later hit a two-run homer, and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied from a three-run deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants 11-6 on Friday night.

Greg Garcia hit a tying RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning off Mark Melancon, then Sam Dyson (1-2) gave it up in the ninth. Tyler Lyons (3-0) pitched the eighth for the win.

Paul DeJong added a two-run double in the six-run ninth and Yadier Molina had an RBI single.

Harrison Bader hit a two-run homer in the third for St. Louis before San Francisco added on again with Hunter Pence’s two-run triple in the bottom half.

Randal Grichuk added a solo homer in the sixth for the Cardinals, his third straight game clearing the fences.
