Chiefs’ Berry out for season with ruptured Achilles’ tendon

Sports

September 8th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Chiefs safety Eric Berry ruptured his left Achilles tendon in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s victory in New England and the three-time All-Pro will miss the remainder of the season. Berry was hurt while covering Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski on a passing route. He hobbled at the end of the play and sat on the turf, and it took a cart to remove him from the field.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid suspected after the game that it was an Achilles injury, and he said Friday that an MRI exam confirmed the diagnosis. Berry has overcome plenty of hurdles in his career. He missed most of the 2011 season after tearing the ACL in his left knee, then missed much of the 2014 season after he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

He signed a $78 million, six-year contract this past offseason.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — There were big plays all over the field. The Chiefs, not the Patriots, were making them. Alex Smith threw two long touchdown passes and rookie Kareem Hunt, after fumbling on his first NFL carry, scored three times to help Kansas City stun New England 42-27 Thursday night in the season opener. It was the first time the Patriots lost at Gillette Stadium when leading at halftime, a span of 82 games.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Dexter Fowler struck out against Brad Hand with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, capping the San Diego Padres’ 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday night. Lance Lynn gave up a run and six hits over six innings. St. Louis ended a four-game winning streak and lost for only the second time in eight games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Twins’ Jorge Polanco drove in the go-ahead runs off ailing Kansas City closer Kelvin Herrera with two outs in the ninth inning, and Minnesota rallied to beat the Royals 4-2 Thursday night. Trevor Hildenberger earned the win with a scoreless eighth in relief of Twins starter Kyle Gibson, while Matt Belisle handled a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save.

Atlantic looks to keep the ball rolling at Denison-Schleswig

Sports

September 7th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan football team accomplished something last week that the program hasn’t done since 2012, start the season 2-0. This week they hope to build on that momentum and get a third win in a row to start the season, something that hasn’t happened for over a decade. The Trojans go on the road to face the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs on Friday night and we’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN.

Atlantic has used a balanced attack on offense so far this season on their way to wins over Clarinda and Shenandoah. Denison-Schleswig Head Coach Chad Van Kley expects more of that balance to show up on Friday night.

The Monarchs have spread the ball around to a number of players so far this season with four different guys getting at least 10 rushing attempts through two games. The Monarchs like to play a veer-option type offense and Coach Van Kley thinks consistency in execution will be a big key against a well-rounded Trojan defense.

Atlantic has been able to match-up size wise for the most part so far this season, but Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott is concerned about the size the Monarchs will have up front.

Coach McDermott had similar thoughts to Coach Van Kley on the offensive side of the ball. He thinks it will be tough sledding at times against the defense the Monarchs run but need to be ready to hit a big play when they find a seam.

Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call of the game with pregame starting at 6:30pm and kickoff between the Trojans and Monarchs set for 7:30pm. Catch all the action on-air, online, or on the KJAN mobile app. You can also catch our live streaming video coverage on KJANTV.
