New Chiefs linebacker Ragland could fit into mix soon

Sports

August 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Former Alabama standout Reggie Ragland reported to the Chiefs but was not on the practice field Tuesday, one day after the Buffalo Bills shipped the linebacker to Kansas City for a fourth-round draft pick.

Ragland was injured all of last season and had fallen out of favor in Buffalo, which is in the midst of switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense. The Chiefs play a 3-4 similar to what the Bills ran with Rex Ryan when they chose Ragland in the second round of the 2016 draft.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid would not say when he expects Ragland to make it on the field. The Chiefs play their preseason finale Thursday night against Tennessee. Reid did say that kicker Cairo Santos, who has missed most of training camp with a groin injury, could try field goals against the Titans. But backup Sam Ficken would continue to handle kickoffs.

Matt Carpenter homers, Cardinals beat up on Brewers 10-2

Sports

August 30th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Matt Carpenter hit a two-run homer and Luke Voit drove in four runs, backing Luke Weaver’s 10-strikeout night in a 10-2 win Tuesday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Carpenter’s shot to right in the fifth had added importance for the third baseman after he had pledged $10,000 for every home run that he hit the rest of the season to Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The Galveston, Texas native looked up and pointed two fingers toward the night sky as he touched the plate to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 9-1.

St. Louis chased Matt Garza (6-8) with one out in the fourth. The right-hander walked five and allowed six runs, though only three were earned after the Brewers committed two errors in the third.

The loss dropped the second-place Brewers to 3 1/2 games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs, who won on Tuesday.

Ex-ISU, NFL player charged in Ankeny shoplifting case

Sports

August 29th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ANKENY, Iowa (AP) — A former Iowa State University and NFL player has been arrested, accused of shoplifting ammunition and other items from an Ankeny store. Des Moines television station KCCI reports that 26-year-old Jake Knott was arrested Saturday at the Sportsman’s Warehouse. Police say Knott was stopped outside the store and nearly $800 in ammunition and gun accessories he had not bought were found concealed on Knott.

Knott has been charged with third-degree theft. He was released from the Polk County Jail after posting bond. It’s unclear whether he has an attorney and a phone number could not be found for him Tuesday.

Knott was a linebacker at ISU before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013. He was released by the Eagles in 2014 and was briefly with the Miami Dolphins before being cut in 2015.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals extended their scoreless streak to a franchise-record 43 innings, getting shut out for a fourth straight game in a 12-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. The Royals haven’t scored since the second inning of a 3-2 loss to Colorado last Thursday.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Linebacker Reggie Ragland will get a fresh start in Kansas City after the Chiefs acquired the second-year player in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. In exchange, the Bills acquired a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft. The Chiefs land a player with the potential of being an upgrade for Josh Mauga, who was released earlier in the day.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa quarterback Nathan Stanley has been listed as the starter for Saturday’s opener against Wyoming. Stanley, a sophomore, spent the offseason competing with junior Tyler Wiegers for the opening left by C.J. Beathard’s graduation. Stanley was 5 of 9 passing in 2016 as a true freshman.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tanner Lee hasn’t taken a snap in a game for Nebraska, yet the fan base has already deemed him the quarterback who can return the Cornhuskers to national relevance. The hype has been fueled by the words of a couple former NFL personnel men, one of whom predicted the transfer from Tulane would be a top NFL draft prospect.
