Atlantic football ready to clash with Clarinda

Sports

August 24th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic Trojan football team is ready to get on the field Friday night and hit someone other than teammates. The Trojans open up their second season under Head Coach Mike McDermott on the road at Clarinda Friday night and we’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN. Coach McDermott said he liked some of the things the Trojans did in their scrimmage a week ago but he thinks the guys are ready for a little more excitement this week with an actual opponent.

Atlantic is coming off a 1-8 season a year ago and Coach McDermott feels like the team has made big strides in all three facets of the game in the preparation for this year.

The Trojans have a strong core of returning players and should have a lot of speed to work with in the backfield.  Coach McDermott said they know they need to do more to get the ball in the hands of those speedy players on offense but he also feels speed will be a strength in the defensive secondary.

The opponent for Atlantic in week one is also coming off a 1-8 season. Clarinda has less experience returning from a year ago and they will also have a new Head Coach. Long time Assistant Coach Roger Williams stepped into the Head Coaches chair this summer after the departure of Mark Schilb.  Trojan Head Coach Mike McDermott expects a tough team to line up for Coach Williams.

The Cardinals are hoping to re-establish a tough-physical mentality according to Coach Williams and he said there is a lot of fighting for positions going on early in the year.

Coach Williams said his team will change a few things here and there with the coaching transition but a lot has stayed the same. He felt like the Cardinals didn’t do a good enough job up front against Atlantic last year and is working to improve that this time around.

The Trojans and Cardinals are set to kickoff in Clarinda at 7:00pm Friday night. Tune in to KJAN as Chris Parks and Mike Smith bring you all the action on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the free KJAN mobile app. You can also watch live streaming video of the game on KJANTV. Rookie Luke Weaver helps Cardinals beat Padres 6-2

Sports

August 24th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Rookie Luke Weaver struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings, and Kolten Wong had three hits and three runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals had lost three straight and six of eight following an eight-game winning streak, and had allowed at least five runs in each of the last 12 games.

Weaver (2-1), the right-hander who turned 24 on Monday, allowed three hits in his longest career outing and matched his career best with 10 strikeouts.

San Diego’s Jhoulys Chacin (11-9) allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits in 4 2-3 innings. He struck out three, walked three and hit four batters.

The Cardinals’ leadoff hitters reached and scored in four of the first five innings. Three of those runs scored with two outs.

St. Louis opened the first inning with back-to-back doubles, with Tommy Pham driving in Wong, and Pham scoring on Dexter Fowler’s sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

Wong led off the third with a single and scored on Jedd Gyorko’s two-out infield single. Greg Garcia scored on Chacin’s two-out throwing error on an errant pickoff in the fourth, making it 4-0. Fowler scored on Chacin’s bases-loaded wild pitch in the fifth.

Manuel Margot’s triple off reliever Seung Hwan Oh in the eighth plated the Padres’ first run, making it 5-1. Cory Spangenberg hit a solo home run, his 13th, off John Brebbia in the ninth.

Rosenthal to have Tommy John surgery

Sports

August 24th, 2017 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals announced Wednesday that closer Trevor Rosenthal was being moved from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL and that the right elbow injury would require Tommy John surgery.

“I think just the timing of it, being right in the middle of this race and the way my personal season had been taking shape and the way the team has been playing recently. Tough timing,” Rosenthal said.

“It felt like we were getting in a groove, I was in a groove, and to kind of have this happen and take a piece away from a really good team is a little bit of a bummer.”

Rosenthal, who recorded 93 saves in 2014-15, lost the closer’s job a year ago to Seung Hwan Oh but reclaimed it this season after Oh struggled. Rosenthal recorded 11 saves, giving him 118 over the past four seasons.

Cardinals general manager Mike Girsch said Rosenthal will have surgery next week.

“We hoped for better news,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. “. Somebody is going to have to step in. He was really throwing the ball well.”
