BOSTON (AP) — Xander Bogaerts had three hits, Hanley Ramirez, Sandy Leon and Jackie Bradley Jr. all added two RBIs and the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-4 on Tuesday night. Boston blew the game open courtesy of a wild fifth inning, tallying eight hits and eight runs against Cardinals starter Mike Leake and reliever Matt Bowman. It came an inning after the Red Sox turned their first triple play in six years .

The Red Sox have won 11 of their last 13. Rick Porcello (7-14) was mostly able to cruise, giving up eight hits and three runs over seven innings to pick up the victory. He has won his past three starts after going winless for more than a month.

Leake (7-11) got the loss and has failed to win in his last four starts. He has yielded 28 hits and 15 earned runs in 15 1/3 innings over his last three outings.

The Iowa basketball team completed a trip to Europe with a 4-0 record after an 88-49 win over the Vicenza Al-Stars in Italy. The Hawkeyes won despite making only four of 21 from three point range. The team will spend the final two days of the trip sight seeing. Freshman center Luka Garza had 24 points and 14 rebounds and sophomore forward Tyler Cook also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Cam Gallagher hit a grand slam for his first career home run and second big league hit, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Monday night. Gallagher’s shot into the left-field seats in the sixth inning marked the first grand slam by a Royals rookie since Paulo Orlando connected in the first game of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on July 7, 2015.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ athletics department plans to fund a new scholarship program for nonathletes. University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green says Nebraska Athletics will contribute $5 million annually. The first scholarships will be awarded in time for the 2018-19 school year.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The two quarterbacks competing for the starting job at Kansas happen to be roommates and best of friends. Carter Stanley is the sophomore who started three games last season, while Peyton Bender is the transfer who began his career at Washington State. Kansas coach David Beaty has been in no hurry to appoint a starting quarterback.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo’s 33rd homer of the season and a second straight strong outing from Martin Perez lifted the Texas Rangers over the Detroit Tigers in Arlington. Perez trailed 2-0 just two batters into the game but gave up no more runs in Texas’ 6-2 victory.

Dickey held St. Louis to one run in seven innings, Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer and the Atlanta Braves stopped the Cardinals’ season-high, eight-game winning streak with a 6-3 victory Sunday. Atlanta stopped a five-game losing streak, beat the Cardinals for the first time in six meetings this year.

CHICAGO (AP) — Whit Merrifield hit a three-run homer and drove in a career-high five runs, and the Kansas City Royals pounded the Chicago White Sox 14-6 Sunday. Drew Butera had four of Kansas City’s 16 hits, helping the Royals climb back over .500 at 59-58. Jorge Bonifacio hit his 15th homer, and Lorenzo Cain had two hits and two RBIs.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid’s offense took on a distinct dink-and-dunk quality last season. The Chiefs coach appears intent to change that in the preseason, airing it out in the opener with the promise of more aggressive play-calling to come

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is back for another season, despite a cancer scare earlier this year. The 77-year-old coach believes he has a team capable of contending for a Big 12 title and even a national championship, and no amount of chemotherapy was going to keep him from leading the Wildcats for the 26th year.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska authorities are reminding hunters that state recreation areas are closed to hunting until September 5th. Several hunting seasons, including one for archery deer, open September 1st, and the early teal season opens September 2nd.

2017 Tournament of Champions Winner Andrew Martin

Atlantic native Andrew Martin shot a solid (-1) 68 on Sunday to take the 2017 Tournament of Champions title at Atlantic Golf and Country Club. Martin had a consistent three day run on his way to the crown shooting 71-69-68 to finish at (+1) 208. Martin first lead the tournament after the 16th hole when he birdied and playing partner Steve Davie bogeyed. That was right after Jake Olsen took a

double bogey on 15 to lose the lead.  Martin then parred both 17 and 18 on his way to the title.

Jake Olsen started the day as the leader by five strokes at 3-under ahead of six golfers that started the day at 2-over. Olsen double-bogeyed the first hole after hitting is tee shot out of bounds but was steady after that up through 14. Olsen then got into some trouble on 15 when his tee shot went into an evergreen tree on the left side. He had to take a relief drop and ended up with a 5 and he double-bogeyed the 16th as well to fall back.  Olsen ended up with a birdie on 17 and would have needed an eagle on the final hole to tie Martin. He bogeyed the final hole and ended up tied with Steve Davie for third place at 4-over.

Last year’s champion Alex Bireline had a nice round of 2-under 67 on Sunday to be runner-up at 2-over 209 total.

The Senior Division title came down to a sudden death playoff between Rick Thompson and defending champion Del Miller who both finished 18 at (+10) 217 total. Miller parred the 1st hole and Thompson bogeyed to allow Miller to defend his title.

In the Super Senior Division Arnie Leistad fought back to defend his title as well. Leistad overcame a four-stroke deficit heading into the day to Jim Redemske of Clarmond CC. Leistad shot a 75 on Sunday while Redemske shot 81. Leistad finished at (+19) 226 for the weekend, while Redemske was (+21) 228.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — R.A. Dickey (8-7) allowed seven hits — none for extra bases until his final inning. The 42-year-old knuckleballer has given up one or no earned runs in eight of 23 starts.

Atlanta stopped a five-game losing streak, beat the Cardinals for the first time in six meetings this year and avoided getting swept in the season series for the first time. Arodys Vizcaino pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since Aug. 5 and his sixth in eight tries.

SEATTLE (AP) — Clint Dempsey scored on a header in the 36th minute, and the Seattle Sounders stretched their unbeaten streak to eight games with a 1-0 victory against Sporting Kansas City Saturday. The win lifted Seattle into a tie with Kansas City atop the Western Conference.

CHICAGO (AP) — Melky Cabrera hit a go-ahead, two-run homer against his former team in the eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Saturday night to stop a five-game losing streak. Cabrera, acquired from Kansas City on July 30th, homered with one out off Aaron Bummer and drove in Lorenzo Cain.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Randal Grichuk and Paul DeJong homered and the St. Louis Cardinals stretched their winning streak to eight games with a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves Saturday night. The eight-game run is the longest for St. Louis since the Cardinals won eight in a row April 28th through May 5th, 2015.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — This didn’t take long: The St. Louis Cardinals announced a Rally Cat Night promotion for their September 10th game against Pittsburgh. A cat trotted on the field Wednesday with the Cardinals trailing Kansas City 5-4. After a short delay, Yadier Molina hit a grand slam on the next pitch, and St. Louis went on to an 8-5 win. The cat was placed outside the ballpark near the end of the game and was picked up by a fan, who intended to take it home. But the feline jumped from her grasp and ran off into a grassy area blocks from the stadium. After a lengthy search, the cat was discovered in downtown St. Louis on Friday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The competition for Iowa’s vacant quarterback job will extend into at least next week. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz said Saturday following a public workout at Kinnick Stadium that junior Tyler Wiegers and sophomore Nathan Stanley will continue to split repetitions with the first team as the coaching staff tries to find a replacement for two-year starter C.J. Beathard.
