ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter had four hits and scored the winning run on Matt Holliday’s single in the 12th inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Thursday for their second extra-inning triumph over the NL Central leaders in three days.

The Cardinals took two of three in the series to pull within two games of the sagging Pirates, who have dropped five of six. St. Louis won 4-3 in 14 innings in the series opener on Tuesday night. Rookie Kevin Siegrist (1-1), St. Louis’ seventh pitcher, struck out two in a perfect 12th against the heart of the Pirates order.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith says that he has no hard feelings when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t like to play well Friday night. Smith will be leading the Kansas City Chiefs into Arrowhead Stadium for the first time as their starting quarterback against his former team.

Smith had resurrected his career in San Francisco before getting hurt last season. When he was healthy enough to return, he found he had lost his job to Colin Kaepernick, and then had to watch as Kaepernick led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

Smith was traded to the Chiefs in the offseason and now wants to show the 49ers what they discarded, even if he says the split was amicable.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals activated All-Star catcher Yadier Molina from the 15-day disabled list after he was sidelined with a right knee sprain. Molina was in the lineup Thursday against the Pirates in the finale of a 10-game homestand. They also active outfielder Shane Robinson, who had a shoulder strain.

Backup catcher Tony Cruz, who started 11 of the 14 games that Molina missed, was placed on the 15-day DL with a stress fracture of his left forearm. Infielder Jermaine Curtis was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.  Molina’s .330 average was second in the National League and he was batting .383 with runners in scoring position.

Robinson, who was batting .263 in 65 games, appeared in three games for Double-A Springfield during an injury rehabilitation assignment. Cruz was batting .212 with one homer and 11 RBIs in 41 games.

Group limiting initial ‘Field of Dreams’ plans

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) – The group working to build a 24-field youth baseball and softball complex near the “Field of Dreams” movie site is scaling back initial construction plans.  The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports dormitories for coaches and players have been removed from the first construction phase. The number of fields in the initial phase also has been reduced from 12 to six.

Denise Stillman is president and chief executive officer of Field of Dreams ownership group Go the Distance Baseball. She says the facility will open in time for the 2014 season, and the 25th anniversary of the movie starring Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer who carves a baseball diamond out of a cornfield. Stillman says the group limited its plans to ensure the attraction doesn’t “overburden the hotel accommodation system.”
