Jay’s HR, 3 RBIs lead Cardinals past Angels 12-2

Sports

July 4th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jon Jay had three RBIs, including a two-run homer off center fielder Mike Trout’s glove during St. Louis’ seven-run second inning, and the Cardinals ended the Los Angeles Angels’ seven-game winning streak with a 12-2 rout on Wednesday night. Matt Carpenter, batting leadoff in front of Jay, also homered and drove in three runs to help keep the Cardinals two games behind Pittsburgh in the NL Central.

Shelby Miller (9-6) struck out six over six innings and allowed five hits, including a two-run homer by Hank Conger in the second. Jerome Williams (5-4) was charged with seven runs, four hits and four walks in just 1 2-3 innings. The right-hander had not given up more than three bases on balls in any of his previous 17 starts.

Iowa Bicycle Coalition exec: Iowans will be hospitable to Lance Armstrong on RAGBRAI

Sports

July 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The head of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition says Lance Armstrong will likely get a warm welcome on this year’s RAGBRAI. Armstrong will participate in three or four days of the week-long bicycle ride across the state according to The Des Moines Register, the newspaper that hosts RAGBRAI. It’s the first public cycling event Armstrong has attended since admitting he cheated when he won seven Tour de France victories. Mark Wyatt, the executive director of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, says it’s one way Armstrong may be trying to rehabilitate his image.

“I think Americans are prone to forgiveness, but I think there’s a lot of bridges to mend and I think he’s got some work to do,” Wyatt says. Wyatt doesn’t think Iowans will be hostile to Armstrong, however. “I think everybody’s got to make their own judgments, but I think we’re Iowans and I think we open our doors to everybody,” Wyatt says. “I think that’s the really neat thing about RAGBRAI is everybody’s just on a bike. Everybody’s just a bicyclist and everybody’s riding across the state.”

Wyatt says there are all sorts of other bicycling events Armstrong could have picked, like the Gran Fondo in New York that attracts seven-thousand cyclists from around the world. “Obviously we’ve made an impression on Lance Armstrong as Iowa being one of the greatest places in the world to ride a bicycle and this is a cyclist who’s ridden all over the world, but keeps returning to our state to enjoy this big event and to enjoy the hospitality that Iowans have to offer,” Wyatt says.

This past January, during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Armstrong admitted he engaged in what’s called blood “doping” when he was competing in the world’s most famous bicycle race. The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa rolls out of Council Bluffs on July 21st and ends 406 miles later in Fort Madison on July 27th. An expo will be held in Council Bluffs on July 20th — the day before RAGBRAI starts — and Armstrong told The Register he plans to attend that. Armstrong faces legal woes after admitting he used performance-enhancing drugs during competitions. The U.S. Justice Department is suing, seeking repayment of the 17-million the U.S. Postal Service paid to sponsor Armstrong’s cycling team. Armstrong has been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life from competitive sports.

Angels host Cardinals for 1st time, win 5-1

Sports

July 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jered Weaver earned his second win of an injury-plagued season with help from a five-run second inning, and the Los Angeles Angels extended their winning streak to seven games Tuesday night with a 5-1 victory over St. Louis in the Cardinals’ first game at Angel Stadium. St. Louis was the only National League club that had never played at the “Big A,” having hosted the three previous interleague series between the teams in 2002, 2007 and 2010.

Three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols, who spent his first 12 major league seasons with the Cardinals before signing a $240 million, 10-year contract with the Angels in December 2011 as a free agent, played his first game against his former club and was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts and a walk as the designated hitter while Mark Trumbo started at first base.

Lance Armstrong commits to RAGBRAI event in Iowa

Sports

July 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong says he’ll return to his bike later this month for a state-long trek across Iowa. Armstrong tells the Des Moines Register that he and staffers from his Austin, Texas-based bicycle shop will ride for “three or four days” in RAGBRAI, an annual event sponsored by the newspaper that runs from the Missouri to Mississippi rivers.

This will mark the fifth visit to RAGGRAI for Armstrong, who told interviewer Oprah Winfrey in January after years of denials that he doped for all seven of his Tour de France wins from 1999-2005. Armstrong says his impending trip to Iowa isn’t a statement or an experiment. He says he simply wants to ride with what is typically “a friendly group of people that share the same interests.”
