Iowa State’s young guards seek playing time

Sports

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A major part of Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg’s plan to replace his starting backcourt is to lean on transfers again. But the Cyclones also have a host of young guards eager to show Hoiberg that the solution was already on the roster. Iowa State’s hopes for a third straight trip to the NCAA tournament next season rest largely on how it overcomes the loss of guards Korie Lucious, Chris Babb and Tyrus McGee.

Hoiberg brought in former Marshall star DeAndre Kane and junior college standout K.J. Bluford with the expectations that both will compete for significant minutes. But the Cyclones have four underclassmen guards and a veteran backup in Bubu Palo. None of them are planning to spend the season on the bench either.

Freshman point guard Monte Morris says the players are just going to see how the chips fall.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Lance Lynn outpitched Marlins All-Star Jose Fernandez for his 11th win and Matt Holliday homered for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-2 victory that wrapped up a three-game sweep Sunday.

Lynn (11-3) worked seven strong innings in 87-degree heat and matched All-Star Adam Wainwright for the team lead in wins, bouncing back from losses in consecutive starts for the first time in his career. He struck out seven, fanning Giancarlo Stanton all three times, and has reached 11 wins prior to the break both of his years in the rotation.

The 20-year-old Fernandez (5-5) worked six innings a day after getting the nod as the Marlins’ lone All-Star and gave up three runs on four hits and a season-high four walks. He hadn’t allowed more than two earned runs in his previous six outings.

Cardinals C Molina says knee injury minor

ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina believes a little rest is all he needs after an MRI exam on his right knee showed only inflammation. He’s hopeful of being back in the lineup on Tuesday.  Molina, who topped NL vote-getters for the All-Star Game, was certain he’d be ready for that game. He said the knee had been bothering him for a month but felt worse Friday, so the team sent him for medical tests.

Manager Mike Matheny said it would be a day to day situation. The Cardinals have Monday off. Molina leads the National League with a .346 average. He’s played in 81 of the first 86 games and led major league catchers in innings. Backup Tony Cruz made his ninth start Sunday against the Marlins.

Cardinals beat Marlins 5-4 on Stanton error

Sports

July 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Jon Jay scored from first on right fielder Giancarlo Stanton’s throwing error on Shane Robinson’s single with two outs in the ninth inning, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 5-4 victory over the Florida Marlins on Saturday.  Edward Mujica (1-1) worked a scoreless ninth for the Cardinals after Matt Adams’ pinch-hit two-run homer tied it two innings earlier.

Jay drew a full-count walk off A.J. Ramos (3-3) with two outs in the ninth and had third easily on Robinson’s pinch-hit single, then scored without a play after Stanton hesitated before throwing a relay that skipped under Morrison’s glove at first base.

The Marlins got homers from Derek Dietrich and Logan Morrison but their run of four straight series wins ended after dropping the first two against the Cardinals.

Westbrook strong, Cardinals beat Marlins 4-1

Sports

July 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jake Westbrook worked seven strong innings and Allen Craig had two RBIs for a lineup that spoiled Jacob Turner’s homecoming early on in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Friday night. Matt Holliday doubled twice with an RBI and Edward Mujica rebounded with the save for the Cardinals, who had lost eight of 11 and plummeted from the majors’ best record to second place in the NL Central entering a five-game home stand.

The Marlins totaled three hits and lost for just the third time in 11 games. The hard-throwing Turner (2-1) surrendered four runs on seven hits in six innings. Westbrook (5-3) was hurt only by Logan Morrison’s 440-foot homer to straightaway center leading off the second.
