Sports

August 24th, 2013 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Adam Wainwright earned his NL-leading 15th win with his fifth complete game and had a key sacrifice fly to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.

Matt Holliday’s 432-foot home run off Kris Medlen (10-12) snapped a sixth-inning tie for St. Louis, which took the first two games of a four-game set against the NL East leaders.

Having already thrown 101 pitches, Wainwright was allowed to bat with the one out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning and hit a long sacrifice fly off Scott Downs for his third RBI of the season to make it 3-1. He then retired the side in order in the eighth.

Iowa tabs Jake Rudock as QB

August 23rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa sophomore Jake Rudock will be the starting quarterback for the season opener against Northern Illinois on Aug. 31. The announcement was made on Friday. Rudock was the backup to James Vandenberg in 2012, though he never took a snap for the Hawkeyes.

Rudock, from Weston, Fla., played for St. Thomas Aquinas High — winning 31 games and three state titles as the starter. He takes over a passing game that threw just seven TD tosses last season and ranked 104th nationally in yards.

C.J. Beathard and Cody Sokol will serve as Rudock’s backups.

ST. LOUIS, MO., August 23, 2013 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Jake Westbrook (lower back strain) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 22, and recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez from Memphis (AAA).

Martinez, who made his first Major League start on August 8 vs. the Dodgers, is 0-1 in 11 games (one start) for the Cardinals.  The 21-year-old rookie has fanned 13 batters in his 16.0 innings pitched for St. Louis.  Martinez has compiled a 5-3 mark with a 2.66 ERA in his 12 games started at Memphis.  His most recent start for the triple-A Redbirds came last Sunday (August 18) vs. Omaha when he struck out six in 4.0 innings.

Martinez wears uniform # 62.

Sports

August 23rd, 2013 by Jim Field

NEW YORK (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Yoenny Gonzalez has been suspended for 50 games for an unspecified violation of baseball’s minor league drug program.

The 21-year-old, selected from Central Florida Community College in the eighth round of the 2012 amateur draft, was hitting .192 with no homers and 10 RBIs in 104 at-bats this season with Johnson City of the rookie level Appalachian League.

The suspension was announced Thursday. It’s the 39th this year under the minor league program.

Kelly Pitches Cardinals to 6-2 Win over Braves

Sports

August 23rd, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joe Kelly pitched six effective innings, Matt Holliday broke out of a slump with two doubles and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Atlanta Braves 6-2 on Thursday night.

David Freese drove in two runs as St. Louis won for the fifth time in six games.

The Braves played without Jason Heyward, who is out with a broken right jaw after he was beaned during Wednesday’s 4-1 win at the New York Mets. The outfielder had surgery on Thursday in Atlanta.

Justin Upton hit his 24th homer, but the Braves lost for the second time in three games at the start of a six-game trip. Atlanta had won eight of its last nine regular-season games against St. Louis.
