MILWAUKEE (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, putting the St. Louis Cardinals ahead during a four-run rally Monday night in an 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Cardinals got seven of their 16 hits in the big inning, capped by David Freese’s two-run double. St. Louis won for the ninth time in 11 games.
Aramis Ramirez snapped a 1-for-18 skid since returning from the disabled list Aug. 13 with a two-run homer off Michael Wacha in the seventh to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead.
It didn’t last long. The Cardinals erupted in the eighth off reliever Brandon Kintzler.
Edward Mujica, who was unavailable during the weekend series at the Chicago Cubs because of a tired arm, pitched the ninth for his 32nd save in 34 chances.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have traded wide receiver Jon Baldwin to the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver A.J. Jenkins in a swap of disappointing first-round picks.
Baldwin was the 26th overall pick of the Chiefs in 2011. He missed time his rookie season after getting hurt in a fight with a teammate, and has been prone to dropping passes. He has just 41 catches for 579 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons.
Jenkins was the 30th overall pick of the 49ers last year. He appeared in only three games as a rookie and did not make a catch, even though he was healthy all season.
It’s the second significant deal between the Chiefs and 49ers this year. Kansas City acquired quarterback Alex Smith from San Francisco for a pair of draft picks during the offseason.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl running back Jamaal Charles returned to Chiefs practice with no hesitation Sunday despite a lingering right foot strain that caused soreness to travel halfway up his leg. Charles spoke to reporters before hitting the practice field for the first time since last Monday, when he stepped on a teammate during the workout. He missed last Friday night’s preseason game against San Francisco and his status for next weekend’s game at Pittsburgh is undecided. Rookie running back Knile Davis worked out with the first team while Charles was out.
Charles said it was the first time he’d had this type of foot strain, calling the injury “weird” and that “it was definitely scary” because it affected the way he runs. When asked whether there was any hesitation about practicing Sunday, Charles said, “Oh no.” The Chiefs are not scheduled to practice Monday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sam Dorman won the his third title of the week Sunday in the U.S. national diving championships, teaming with Zac Nees in the men’s synchronized 3-meter event. Deidre Freeman won the women’s 3-meter title, Steele Johnson topped the field in the men’s 10-meter, and Samantha Bromberg and Cheyenne Cousineau won the women’s synchronized 10-meter.
Dorman, also the individual 1-meter and 3-meter winner this week, and Nees finished with the 390.33 points in the final. They were second with two rounds to go and took the lead with 80.58 points on their fifth dive, an inward 3½ tuck. They finished with 77.52 points on a front 2½ with two twists.
CHICAGO (AP) — Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright struck out 11 and allowed one run through seven innings, and Jon Jay drove in four runs with a homer and double to lead St. Louis to a 6-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Matt Carpenter singled in two runs in the third to help back Wainwright (14-7), who was in command and allowed just five hits and one walk after going 0-2 in his previous four starts.
Junior Lake drove in the Cubs’ only run with a double in the sixth. Wainwright hadn’t won since July 21 at home against San Diego and had allowed 14 runs in 28 innings during the span. On Sunday, he faced only one batter over the minimum through the first five innings and only 26 through seven innings.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Injured running back Jamaal Charles plans to return to Chiefs practice today (Sunday), though coach Andy Reid wouldn’t say how much he’ll participate or whether Charles will play in next weekend’s preseason game at Pittsburgh. Charles sat out Friday night’s 15-13 loss to the San Francisco after straining his right foot in practice earlier in the week. The Chiefs’ offense failed to score a touchdown in the game.
Charles worked out prior to kickoff, but Reid said he didn’t want to risk further injury by allowing him to play in the game. Instead, Charles spent most of the night helping rookie running back Knile Davis, who got most of the reps with the No. 1 offense.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Grant Garwood struck out 13 and allowed one hit, and Urbandale, Iowa avoided a final-inning meltdown to eke out a 6-5 win over Grosse Pointe, Michigan in a Little League World Series elimination game Saturday night.
Alex Augustine gave up a two-run single to Ryan Duffy and a three-run home run to Thomas Maxey before striking out Louis Cardinale to end the game. Garwood reached his 85-pitch limit, and had to be pulled with Urbandale ahead 6-0. Brook Heinen hit a three-run home run for Iowa (1-1) in the fourth inning. Brady Roberts drove in two runs and Carter Troncin hit a solo shot in the fifth at South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
It was a near dramatic comeback for Grosse Pointe (0-2), which had not managed a hit in the tournament until Maxey opened the fifth-inning with a double.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz isn’t quite ready to announce a starting quarterback. But it sure sounds as if he has already picked sophomore Jake Rudock. Rudock took nearly all the snaps with the starters Saturday night during an open scrimmage at Kinnick Stadium. Redshirt freshman C.J. Beathard ran most of the plays with the second unit, and junior college transfer Cody Sokol appears to have fallen back to third on the depth chart.
Ferentz will likely announce a starter for the Aug. 31 opener against Northern Illinois by the end of next week — and all indications are that Rudock will get the nod.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Sam Dorman won the 3-meter title Saturday in the U.S. national diving championships, four days after topping the field in the 1-meter event. Dorman, from Tempe, Arizona finished with 487.40 points. He earned 96.25 points on his reverse 3½ tuck in round three scored 91.80 points on his inward 3½ tuck in round five, and secured the win with 86.70 points on a front 2½ with two twists in the final round.
Murphy Bromberg of Bexley, Ohio, won the women’s 10-meter, University of Iowa grad Deidre Freeman of Grinnell, Iowa, and Kaylea Arnett of Spring, Texas, teamed to take the women’s synchronized 3-meter, and David Dinsmore of New Albany, Ohio, and Steele Johnson of Carmel, Indiana won the men’s synchronized 10-meter.
