Iowa pheasant survey results show popular game bird numbers up significantly

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 4th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Iowa’s recently completed annual pheasant survey is great news for hunters – A DNR report released today (Friday) – says statewide, Iowa averaged 20.2 birds per 30-mile route, up significantly from 2019, with six of the nine survey regions averaging more than 20 pheasants per route, the most since 2007. Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), says “Pheasant hunters should expect significantly better pheasant numbers in 2020. Pheasant hunting this fall could be some of the best the state has seen in a decade.”

Bogenschutz credits the 2020 winter with its mild temperatures and little snowfall that led to higher hen survival and coupled with a dry spring to more successful nesting and an increase in the population. The southeast region led the way with a 163 percent increase, followed by the northeast region with a 115 percent increase and east central region with a 55 percent increase. While those numbers are very good, the statewide numbers would have likely been better if not for the drought conditions impacting much of the state.

“In the western and central regions where we counted fewer birds, we struggled to get good survey conditions so the results are not likely representative of actual numbers,” Bogenschutz said. “Pheasant populations in these regions appear higher than last year, according to casual staff reports, even though the survey says the population is essentially unchanged. “Given this year’s statewide index of 20 birds per route Iowa, pheasant hunters should harvest approximately 250,000 to 350,000 roosters this fall,” he said.

Iowa’s quail population was essentially unchanged from 2019 with the highest quail numbers coming from southwest Iowa. While the counts were unchanged, it is still double the number of quail counted from a decade ago. Hunters can expect to harvest more than 20,000 quail this year. Iowa’s partridge population was up slightly over last year with higher counts coming from northcentral Iowa. Iowa’s rabbit population was nearly identical to 2019 with better populations across southern and east central Iowa. “Cottontail hunters can expect excellent hunting across most of the state this fall,” Bogenschutz said.

  • Iowa’s pheasant season is Oct. 31-Jan. 10, 2021
  • Iowa’s quail season is Oct. 31-Jan. 31, 2021
  • Iowa’s partridge season is Oct. 10-Jan. 31, 2021
  • Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season is Sept. 5-Feb. 28, 2021.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Robert’s 458-foot home run capped a second five-run inning of the night for Chicago as the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 11-6. Robert was one of three White Sox to homer in the contest, joining Edwin Encarnacion and Tim Anderson. The White Sox pulled within a half-game of the idle Cleveland Indians for the lead in the American League Central. They lead the third-place Twins by one game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — As college and professional sports teams resume or begin their seasons, hoping to allow at least some fans into their facilities, they are faced with the same question: How many can safely attend? It’s a question the Chiefs answered by settling on 22% of capacity for Arrowhead Stadium, where the Super Bowl champs will open the NFL season against Houston next week. But that seemingly random number is not random at all. Numerous factors went into settling on the roughly 17,000 fans, including input from local and state health officials, the layout of the stadium and the ability to properly conduct contact tracing should an outbreak occur.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Terence “Bud” Crawford is looking for a fight. The undefeated WBO welterweight champion has never fought less than twice in a calendar year as a professional. He faces the possibility of being idle all of 2020. The 32-year-old said he’s using the time off to rest his body and spend time with his family. He also continues to train. Crawford hasn’t had a fight since he stopped Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the ninth round at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum is trying to line up a fight against Kell Brook before the year is over.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — OG Anunoby grabbed a crosscourt inbounds pass from Kyle Lowry and drained a 3-pointer at the horn to give the Toronto Raptors a 104-103 triumph over Boston. It came just a half-second after Daniel Theis dunked to give the Celtics a two-point lead. Lowry played virtually the whole way, finishing with 31 points, eight assists and six rebounds as the Raptors pulled within 2-1 in the NBA’s Eastern Conference semifinals.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Kawhi Leonard scored 29 points and the Los Angeles Clippers shot 57% from the field in a 120-97 trouncing of Denver in Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference semifinal series. The Clippers took charge in the second quarter, outscoring the Nuggets 38-20 to take a 69-51 lead. Paul George scored 19 points and Marcus Morris added 18 for Los Angeles.

NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams’ drive for her 24th major championship continues at the U.S. Open. The 38-year-old Williams has advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Margarita Gasparyan. Williams improved her career record to 20-0 in the second round at Flushing Meadows and will play Sloane Stephens in the next round.

Atlantic hopes to get offense moving in week 2 meeting with Kuemper Catholic

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (0-1) football team heads to Carroll on Friday night to face the Kuemper Catholic Knights (0-1) and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. Both teams are looking to break into the win column after facing tough top-ten ranked opponents in week one. The Trojans fell to the Underwood Eagles 39-0 and the Knights lost to South Central Calhoun 14-0. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said execution just needs to get sharper this week for his squad. Despite the lopsided scoreboard in week one Coach McDermott thought his defense played pretty well.

Coach McDermott expects Kuemper Catholic to be a hungry, tough opponent.

The Knights struggled to find offensive production in their opener as well with only 188 yards gained. Knights first-year head coach Ryan Steinkamp said he saw some good things from his team but they just need to sustain drives.

Coach Steinkamp said the Knights will need to play good assignment football on Friday night and be prepared to face a fast Trojan team.

You can hear more from both head coaches during our game coverage on Friday night. Catch Trojan Preview with Coach McDermott at 4:45 p.m. Our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? will air at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith with the call from Carroll Stadium on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com and you can watch the game as well on KJANTV.

Cardinals place Fowler on injured list

Sports

September 3rd, 2020 by Jim Field

CINCINNATI, Ohio – September 2, 2020 – Prior to Wednesday’s series finale in Cincinnati, the St. Louis Cardinals announced that they placed outfielder Dexter Fowler on the Injured List, optioned right-handed pitcher Ryan Meisinger to the Alternate Training Site, recalled left-handed pitcher Rob Kaminsky from the Alternate Training Site, and activated infielder Rangel Ravelo from the Injured List.

Fowler, 34, was hitting .279/.349/.485 (19-68) with four home runs and 14 RBI this season. The switch-hitting outfielder reached base safely in 19 of his 23 games while co-leading the Cardinals in home runs and ranking 2nd in RBI.

Kaminsky, who is celebrating his 26th birthday today, has made two scoreless outings this season for St. Louis.

Ravelo, 28, rejoins St. Louis after missing the previous 22 games while on the Injured List. The right-handed hitter has appeared in one game this season on July 29 at Minnesota.

Meisinger, 26, pitched a scoreless inning in last night’s 16-2 win in Cincinnati.
