Return of football renews fears over more virus spread

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Fans tailgating outside the stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play say precautions will keep them safe from the coronavirus as the NFL returns for the first time in months. But experts fear the return to football stadiums, however limited, along with gatherings to watch games, could result in an uptick in infections.

NFL football will kick off Thursday in Kansas City at a stadium that’s allowing 17,000 fans inside. Those spectators may be able to physically distance in the stands, but whether they’re able to do so at concessions or in bathrooms is a different story.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs lined up along the goal line about 30 minutes before kickoff Thursday night in a show of solidarity for social justice initiatives while a video played on the screens in each end zone of Arrowhead Stadium. Along with the words “It Takes All of Us” on the screens, the video showcased Alicia Keyes performing the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” It was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson and set to music by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, and is often referred to as the “Black national anthem.”

Fishing regulations relaxed at Pioneer Park Pond

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

September 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Clarinda – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has relaxed the fishing regulations at Pioneer Park Pond in Page County to allow anglers to more freely harvest fish before the pond is renovated this fall.

Pioneer Park Pond has suffered from numerous summer fish kills due to its shallow depth and significant algal blooms. The quality of the sportfish community has declined due to abundant populations of common carp and black bullhead.

Page County Conservation Board will begin to drain the pond at the end of September for the renovation project. Planned improvements include targeted dredging, construction of a forebay area to reduce sedimentation in the pond, fishing jetty construction, elimination of injurious fish including common carp and black bullhead, and fish habitat improvements.

Anglers with a valid sport fishing license may harvest all sizes and unlimited quantities of any species of fish from Pioneer Park Pond. Any number of fishing poles or jug fishing is allowed. Anglers must remain in sight of these lines at all times, and follow all other fishing regulations and area rules. Trot lines will be allowed (name and address must be attached), however lines may not be set across the entire water body.

Liberalized fishing regulations for Pioneer Park Pond will be in effect through Oct. 15. Specific regulation changes include:

  • Removal of bag and length limit restrictions on largemouth bass.
  • Removal of bag limit on channel catfish.
  • Removal of bag limit on crappie and bluegill.

Dynamite, poison, electric shocking devices or any stupefying substances are not allowed. It is illegal to sell fish or stock captured fish into public waters.

The DNR will restock the pond after the project is complete and the pond has refilled.

Riverside off to a great start, ready for strong challenge from St. Albert

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by admin

The Riverside Bulldogs (2-0) will host the St. Albert Falcons (0-2) in a big Class A District 9 football game on Friday night and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The Bulldogs have played well in their two opening wins over Red Oak and West Monona. Riverside Head Coach Darrell Frain said the guys have met the challenges placed in front of them by the coaching staff so far.

Quarterback Austin Kremkoski has completed 61% of his passes for 273 yards and 3 touchdowns so far. He has also racked up 149 rushing yards and 3 more scores. Rhett Bentley has been the workhorse tailback with 235 yards and 5 scores so far this year. St. Albert Head Coach Jake Driver said they will have a challenge to slow down the Bulldogs backfield.

The Falcons have faced some really tough competition to start the year. They opened with a loss to a top-5 ranked Lewis Central team out of Class 3A. They then had a physical battle with Logan-Magnolia in week 2. Coach Driver said his team is trying to move past those games and focus on the next task.

The Falcons have some experience and speed, especially on the edges and Coach Frain said they will need to try to contain a faster opponent.

Join Chris Parks and Mike Smith for coverage of the game from Oakland. Tune in on AM 1220, FM 101.1, or online at kjan.com. You can also watch the live video stream on KJANTV. We’ll start the night with our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. with the Dvorak Tire & Service Pregame Show to follow at 6:30 p.m. and Kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Atlantic gears up for District play against Greene County

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans (1-1) football team hits the road on Friday night to Jefferson to face the Greene County Rams (1-1) to open up Class 2A District 9 play. The Trojans bounced back from an opening loss to Underwood with a big win over Kuemper Catholic last week. Greene County won a tight game over Bondurant-Farrar in their opener and dropped a game to South Central Calhoun in week 2. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said his team took some steps forward last week.

Greene County will play a similar offensive style to the Knights, spreading the field with multiple wide receivers and they have a quarterback that is willing to take off and run. Bryce Stalder has thrown for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran for 71 yards and another score. Jaxon Warnke leads the Rams with 8 catches for 141 yards and a score. Coach McDermott said the defense is going to get tested at all levels this week.

Atlantic got a boost in the backfield last week with Bodie Johnson and Korey Parrott both rushing for close to 75 yards each. With a night that is expected to be a little soggy that ground game may become an important factor.  Kickoff for the game in Jefferson is set for 7:00 p.m. Visiting fan seating is limited and fans will be asked to wear face coverings entering the stadium and when moving about in common areas.

You can hear the full interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon on KJAN.

No. 23 Iowa State facing stiff test against Ragin’ Cajuns

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(A-P) – Iowa State will open against an opponent from the Football Bowl Subdivision for the first time since 2012. The Cyclones originally were set to ease into the season against South Dakota from the Championship Subdivision. The coronavirus pandemic caused postponements and cancellations across college football, and the Cyclones had to scramble to line up Louisiana-Lafayette for Saturday.

ISU coach Matt Campbell hopes the Cyclones don’t get more than they bargained for in a game that will net the Ragin’ Cajuns $350,000. Lafayette is coming off an 11-win season that ranks as its best in program history.

Chiefs nix headdresses, face paint to start NFL season

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Associated Press) MISSION, Kan. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs fans who file into Arrowhead Stadium for a masked and socially distanced start to the NFL season won’t be wearing headdresses or face paint amid a nationwide push for racial justice following the police-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The move by the reigning Super Bowl champions has pleased Native Americans as a good first step. But it frustrated some of the 17,000 fans who will be in the stands tonight (Thursday night).

The team will be the first to take the field in front of a crowd amid the coronavirus pandemic. The team also announced last month that it’s discussing the future of its tomahawk chop celebration.

Big 12 opens virus-delayed 25th season with only 7 games

Sports

September 10th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The Big 12 Conference is opening its 25th season a week later than expected, and with just seven of its 10 teams playing. No. 15 Oklahoma State, TCU and Baylor all had their scheduled openers and only non-conference games postponed because of the coronavirus. No. 23 Iowa State opens against an FBS opponent for the first time in coach Matt Campbell’s five seasons. No. 14 Texas is a six-TD favorite over UTEP, while five-time defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma plays its first game with redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler starting at quarterback. He is the fourth different starter in four seasons for the fifth-ranked Sooners.
