ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals’ game Friday (Today) against the Chicago Cubs was postponed after another St. Louis player tested positive for COVID-19. Major League Baseball said the game was postponed to allow more time for additional testing and to complete the contact tracing process. The Cardinals have been off since last week, when two players returned positive coronavirus tests. Eight players in total have tested positive, including star catcher Yadier Molina.

Drake’s Football Season is none and done

Sports

August 7th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Des Moines – Drake Athletics Director Brian Hardin reports the University’s fall 2020 football season is canceled following today’s (Friday’s) decision from the Pioneer Football League.

The Pioneer Football League’s (PFL) Presidents Council announced that its league institutions will not conduct conference competition in fall 2020. The PFL membership is spread from coast-to-coast and throughout the Midwest which poses challenges related to team travel, as well as difficulties meeting applicable state, local and institutional health requirements and COVID-19 mitigation strategies. Officials said on social media, “Recognizing competition is an integral part of the student-athlete’s educational experience, the PFL is committed to exploring meaningful opportunities and experiences for football student-athletes this academic year, if this can be done reasonably and safely.”

Drake Athletics Director Brian Hardin said in a statement, “Last night, I met with our football team and informed them that they would not be competing this fall. The idea of not having Drake football play games over the next few months is disappointing on many levels. I feel terrible for our student-athletes, coaches, and staff in our football program. But my heart really goes out to our fifth-year senior student-athletes who made the decision to return for one final season and now, through no fault of their own, will not have the opportunity to play this fall.”

Iowa basketball embraces lofty expectations

Sports

August 7th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery says his Hawkeyes are embracing the expectations for next season. With Luka Garza withdrawing his name from the NBA Draft the Hawkeyes return seven players with starting experience from a team that finished last season with a 20-11 record.

Iowa is likely to be a top five team in the national pre-season polls.

McCaffery says Iowa’s biggest hurdle may be how tough the Big Ten will be, again.

Sophomore guard C.J. Fredrick says the Hawkeyes hope to keep the expectations in perspective.

Fredrick says the Hawkeyes will have a lot of balance on offense.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whit Merrifield, Maikel Franco and Jorge Soler homered, and the Kansas City Royals stopped a six-game slide with a 13-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Soler and Salvador Pérez each had three hits and two RBIs, helping Brad Keller to the win in his first major league appearance in nearly a year. Keller, who opened the season on the injured list after testing positive for the coronavirus, struck out seven in five scoreless innings. Kansas City finished with a season-high 18 hits. It scored a total of 14 runs during its losing streak.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs hope to know soon whether cornerback Bashaud Breeland will be suspended to start the season, but they are confident they’ll be fine either way. Even before the veteran was arrested in South Carolina in April, the Chiefs worked hard to fortify one of the crucial spots in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s defense. They signed special teams ace Antonio Hamilton, who played for the Giants last season, and used a pair of draft picks on cornerbacks. L’Jarius Sneed was picked in the fourth round and Bopete Keyes was chosen in the seventh.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) and Khris Middleton scored 33 points each, and the Milwaukee Bucks overcame a huge early deficit to get a 130-116 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Heat led by as many as 23 points in a first half where the team piled up 73 points despite playing without Jimmy Butler and Goran Dragic (GOHR’-uhn DRAH’-gich).

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Deandre Ayton had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and the Phoenix Suns continued their improbable run in the NBA bubble with their fourth straight win 114-99 over the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. Devin Booker added 20 points and 10 assists and Cameron Johnson had 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Suns pulled away with a 21-0 run that began late in the third quarter and carried over into the fourth.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run homer, Hector Neris struck out Aaron Judge in a big spot and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 5-4. Phillies starter Zach Eflin allowed two unearned runs and four hits, striking out five in four innings in his first start. A beleaguered bullpen surrendered two runs the rest of the way on Gary Sanchez’s two-run homer off Nick Pivetta.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics are on a roll with the rival Houston Astros coming to town at last. Matt Olson homered to back Mike Fiers’ first win of the season and the A’s beat the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Thursday for their sixth straight victory and a series sweep. Khris Davis added a two-run single, Mark Canha had an RBI single and Stephen Piscotty a sacrifice fly as the balanced, first-place A’s won again with Houston on its way.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jason Day opened the the PGA Championship with a bogey-free round of 5-under 65 at the TPC Harding Park. Right behind was Brooks Koepka, going after a third straight PGA Championship title. Koepka had six birdies and was among those at 66. Tiger Woods had a new putter and opened with a 68. Bulked-up Bryson DeChambeau, the longest driver on tour, broke his driver when he bent over to pick up his tee. His support team fetched another shaft.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa athletics department announced Thursday changes to football ticket sales and updated guidelines for the five football games scheduled to be played inside Kinnick Stadium in 2020.

  • Main stand and premium seating in Kinnick Stadium will follow six-feet social distancing guidelines.
  • Fans will be required to wear face coverings and additional mitigation strategies have been implemented.

To provide more access to the limited number of tickets, there will not be season tickets or season parking this year.

  • New single-game prices will be announced soon and they will be priced by stadium section and game.
  • Fans will select tickets in groups of two or four, socially distanced throughout the stadium.

Iowa State reworks football contract with UNLV

Sports

August 6th, 2020 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State and UNLV have mutually agreed to delay their football game scheduled for Sept. 19, 2020 to Sept. 14, 2030 as a result of scheduling modifications by the Big 12 and Mountain West related to COVID-19.

The Cyclones will continue to play at UNLV’s Allegiant Stadium, also home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders, on Sept. 18, 2021 as initially contracted.

“We are pleased we were able to resolve this scheduling modification so quickly”, Pollard said. “We wanted to make sure our student-athletes and fans knew we are still planning to make the trip to Las Vegas next fall to play a football game in a brand new NFL stadium.”

Iowa State last played in Las Vegas in 2008.

“Playing in Las Vegas is like a regular season bowl game for our fan base,” Pollard said. “Amid all of our current challenges and uncertainties, it is exciting to have next year’s trip to look forward to. I am sure thousands of Cyclone fans will make the trip to Las Vegas.”

The schools have met five times previously on the gridiron and the Cyclones hold a 4-1 advantage.

“Coach Campbell feels that giving his players a chance to compete in an NFL stadium is a great opportunity for his team and I know he feels that Cyclone NatioN will respond enthusiastically to provide a great environment for the game,” Pollard said.

Iowa State will announced future edits to its 2020 schedule as it is finalized.

Sports

August 6th, 2020 by admin

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released their honorary rosters for the 2020 All-Star Series. The All-Star Series was scheduled to be played beginning August 6th in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Series was canceled.

While the Series may have been canceled, the IHSBCA strongly supports continuing the tradition of the Senior All-Star Series. The Series is an opportunity for many of Iowa’s best seniors to join together to play ball and establish life-long friendships.

The IHSBCA is honored once again this year to recognize our outstanding seniors selected to the 2020 All-Star Series. Team members were selected by the coaches of each team. The rosters consist of seniors from across the state and are split into four teams once again.

The IHSBCA looks forward to resuming games in the 2021 All-Star Series in August 2021.
