The Harlan boys basketball hit some big shots in key moments down the stretch to defeat Atlantic 62-49 on Tuesday night. The Cyclones led by one at the end of the first and increased the lead to seven by halftime. Atlantic trimmed the lead to 4 early in the third quarter but Isaiah Ahrenholtz hit a three at the top of the key to push the lead back to 7. Atlantic was down 40-35 to start the fourth quarter and after the teams traded buckets Bradley Curren hit a step back three to widen the gap again. The Cyclones went on to hit 10-12 free throws in the final quarter to keep Atlantic at bay and get the win.

The Cyclones were led by 19 points from Bradley Curren and 12 from Aidan Hall. Harlan gets back to .500 on the season with a 9-9 record. Next up for Harlan is a trip to Creston on Friday.

Atlantic got 15 points each from Dayton Templeton and Ethan Williams. The Trojans fall to 9-6 on the season and will prep for a couple of big conference race games to end the week. Home against Shenandoah on Thursday and at Clarinda on Friday. We’ll have coverage of that Clarinda game on Friday on KJAN with pregame at approximately 7:20 p.m.

Harlan outscored Atlantic by 8 in the third quarter and 9 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 62-48 win in girls hoops on Tuesday night. The Trojans started the game strong with good passing and shooting to jump on top 16-10 after one. The Trojans led 28-25 at half before letting the lead slip away. Harlan failed to knock down a three in the first half, but hit three timely ones in the second half to help them jump out front. The Cyclones also controlled the boards in the second half to give them a number of second chance opportunities.

Macie Leinen dropped in 11 of her game high 21 points in the third quarter turnaround for the Cyclones. Claire Schmitz sat much of the game with foul trouble but came up big late with 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter. Brecken Van Baale also finished in double figures with 14 for the Cyclones. Harlan improved to 15-5 on the season and are awaiting their postseason pairing in Class 4A.

Atlantic was led by 14 points from Haley Rasmussen, 12 from Maycie Waters, and 10 from Lauren Nicholas. Atlantic fell to 8-13 on the season and will now turn their attention to the postseason. Atlantic opens up Class 3A Region 1 play on Saturday at home against Greene County. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN with pregame at 6:50 p.m. with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.

The Big Ten Conference Administrators Council, which includes the Directors of Athletics and Senior Women Administrators from all 14 member institutions, approved measures to relocate the 2021 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament from the United Center in Chicago to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The decision to relocate the tournament was made in collaboration with the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors and the conference office.

The decision to relocate the tournament to Indianapolis was based on multiple factors. First and foremost was the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, officials and conference constituents. Hosting both the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in the same city allows for cohesive testing and medical protocols for both events, as well as centralized accommodations surrounding the competition venues.

The Big Ten Conference is grateful to Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the city of Chicago and our partners at the United Center and the Chicago Sports Commission for their flexibility and to Indiana Sports Corp, Lucas Oil Stadium and the city of Indianapolis for being able to assist our basketball teams during these unprecedented times.

The United Center and the city of Chicago have played a vital role in the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament over the past two decades and the conference looks forward to the tournament returning to the United Center in 2023.

The 2021 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 10-14 in Indianapolis and will precede the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, which was moved to Indianapolis and surrounding communities in the state of Indiana in January.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa sophomore Tony Cassioppi has been named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Cassioppi shares the award with Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso.

Cassioppi, the nation’s third-ranked heavyweight, recorded a pair of falls in Iowa’s triangular sweep of Purdue and Ohio State on Feb. 7. He registered a first-period pin against Purdue’s Dorian Keys in two minutes, 15 seconds, and flattened 10th-ranked Tate Orndorff of Ohio State in four minutes, 52 seconds.

Cassioppi has recorded three pins in his last three matches, including two against top 10 opponents.

The weekly conference honor is the first of Cassioppi’s career, and the third for Iowa this season. Spencer Lee has twice been recognized.

At the direction of the University of Iowa medical team, the Iowa Athletics Department announced Monday that the Iowa Wrestling program is pausing all team related in-person activities in response to positive COVID-19 test results within the program. Iowa will continue to follow Big Ten Conference medical protocols and the medical team will make a determination on return to activity. 

Iowa’s dual at Penn State scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12, has been postponed out of an abundance of caution surrounding the health and safety of the participants. The institutions will work with the Conference to identify rescheduling options.

UNDATED (AP) — The top-ranked Iowa wrestling program is pausing all in-person activities in response to positive COVID-19 test results within the program, forcing the postponement of a dual meet at Penn State scheduled for Friday. The move by Iowa came at the direction of the university’s medical team. School officials said the university will continue to follow Big Ten Conference medical protocols and the medical team will decide when the Hawkeyes can resume their season. The schools say they will work with the conference to consider rescheduling options.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has agreed to a new eight-year contract through 2028 after leading the Cyclones to the Big 12 championship game last season. The school did not release terms of the contract. The Cyclones are coming off their most successful season in school history. They were 9-3 overall and first in the Big 12 at 8-1. They lost to Oklahoma in the conference championship game, then beat Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Iowa State also agreed to provide Campbell a total of $3 million for staff salary enhancements over the next three years.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals are bringing back catcher Yadier Molina for an 18th season, agreeing to a $9 million, one-year deal with the nine-time Gold Glove winner. The team announced the move in a statement, saying it would provide more details on the deal Tuesday. The 38-year-old Molina hit .262 with four home runs in 42 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, his last under a $60 million, three-year deal.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs were so confident in their Super Bowl-winning roster from the 2019 season that they did everything they could to bring it back intact, signing quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones to huge deals and reworking other contracts to make the numbers fit in the salary cap. It almost worked, too. But after a 31-9 loss to Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs will have to take a much different approach if they want to reach the big game for the third straight season. That’s because there are plenty of holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Marcus Carr scored 11 of his 19 points in the last five minutes, Jamal Mashburn Jr. added a career-high 11 points and Minnesota defeated Nebraska 79-61. Brandon Johnson scored 13 points with 10 rebounds for the Golden Gophers, who had lost three straight. Minnesota weathered a drought of 7 1/2 minutes, missing 17 straight shots as Nebraska cut a 19-point deficit to 52-45 midway through the second half. Without leading scorer Teddy Allen, the Cornhuskers could get no closer, giving Carr, who only played 19 minutes because of foul trouble, time to get untracked. Lat Mayen tied his career high with 15 points for Nebraska.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former LSU safeties coach Bill Busch will return to Nebraska as a defensive analyst. Busch is one of three staff hires announced Monday by coach Scott Frost. Marcus Castro-Walker will join the Cornhuskers as director of player development after four years at Arizona State. Keanon Lowe was hired as an offensive analyst after working as an analyst at UCLA last season. Busch had two previous four-year stints at Nebraska. He was as an assistant coach under Bill Callahan from 2004-07 and a graduate assistant under Tom Osborne from 1990-93.

Regional duals for Classes 2A and 1A are set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9. Class 3A is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10.

The top eight teams in each class qualify for the State Dual Team Tournament, set for Wednesday, February 17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

For Class 2A and Class 1A, regional dual team sites were determined using the final IWCOA dual team rankings, with eight of the top 16 ranked schools hosting, if possible and practical within geographic areas. The sectional champion and next eight highest ranked teams will be the regional dual team qualifiers. The top-ranked team at each site will receive a bye during the first round.
