Harlan girls turn the tide in second half, beat Atlantic 62-48

Harlan outscored Atlantic by 8 in the third quarter and 9 in the fourth quarter to pull out a 62-48 win in girls hoops on Tuesday night. The Trojans started the game strong with good passing and shooting to jump on top 16-10 after one. The Trojans led 28-25 at half before letting the lead slip away. Harlan failed to knock down a three in the first half, but hit three timely ones in the second half to help them jump out front. The Cyclones also controlled the boards in the second half to give them a number of second chance opportunities.

Macie Leinen dropped in 11 of her game high 21 points in the third quarter turnaround for the Cyclones. Claire Schmitz sat much of the game with foul trouble but came up big late with 12 of her 16 points in the fourth quarter. Brecken Van Baale also finished in double figures with 14 for the Cyclones. Harlan improved to 15-5 on the season and are awaiting their postseason pairing in Class 4A.

Atlantic was led by 14 points from Haley Rasmussen, 12 from Maycie Waters, and 10 from Lauren Nicholas. Atlantic fell to 8-13 on the season and will now turn their attention to the postseason. Atlantic opens up Class 3A Region 1 play on Saturday at home against Greene County. We’ll have coverage of that game on KJAN with pregame at 6:50 p.m. with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
