Atlantic Police advise you to stay home today!

With whiteout conditions being experienced in Atlantic and the rest of the area this morning, Atlantic Police Chief Steve Green says he and other authorities are advising you to stay home, warm and safe, today. Travel conditions are extremely dangerous, with near zero or zero visibility at times due to heavy snow and blowing snow. Roads this morning are, or will be, completely covered with snow. Bridges and overpasses are also reported to be icy. Many businesses, and all schools in the listening area are closed today.

The month of January was a little drier and cooler than normal, but just about average where the High is concerned. The average High temperature last month was 28.4 degrees, which was just 1 degree cooler than normal. The warmest day was the 29th, when we reached 47 degrees.

The average Low was 11.6. That’s 7.8 degrees cooler than normal. The lowest temp of -8 was recorded on Jan. 10th, 16th & 17th.  Snowfall for the month amounted to 3.5 inches, while the liquid value of the snow and any other forms of precipitation, amounted to .61″, which was .23″ less than normal (nearly 1/4 of an inch).

Tonight: **WINTER STORM WARNING in effect from late tonight thru 6-am Wed.**A chance of rain and snow early, turning to all snow, heavy at times overnight, w/areas of blowing snow after midnight. E/NE winds 10-20mph w/gusts to near 35. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible overnight.
Tuesday: Snow, heavy at times w/blowing snow, mainly after noon. High near 32. NE @ 20-to 40mph. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible during the day.
Tue. Night: Snow, mainly before midnight, w/widespread blowing snow, mainly before 9pm. Low around 15. N/NE winds @ 20-40mph. Wind chill values as low as zero. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. TOTAL SNOWFALL FOR THE PERIOD OF 6-12” IS POSSIBLE.
Wednesday: Patchy blowing snow before 9am. Becoming Partly sunny, but continued windy. High near 21. N/NW winds 15-30 in the morning, decreasing to 10-20 during the afternoon.
Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 9.
Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 28.

Sunday’s High in Atlantic was 43. Our 24-low ending today at 7-a.m. was 21. Last year on this date, Atlantic’s High was 26 and the Low was -8. The All-time record High for this date in Atlantic was 58 in 1987. The record Low was -27 in 1979.

Potential winter storm still on track to impact Iowa

The National Weather Service said on its social media page today (Thursday), a potential winter storm is still on track to impact the state late Monday night mainly after midnight, and continue into Wednesday. Heavy snow will be possible across much of Iowa, with strong gusty winds picking up Tuesday into Wednesday. Travel may become hazardous due to the possibility and combination of heavy snow, gusty winds and blowing snow.

Be sure and stay up-to-date on this developing winter storm.
