Iowa finds success with tight ends

Sports

October 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is as deep at tight end as any other position group on its roster. The Hawkeyes exploited that advantage against Ohio State — and wound up with one of their best passing efforts of the season.

Jake Rudock threw for 245 yards and career-high three touchdowns, including one each to tight ends C.J. Fiedorowicz and Jake Duzey, in a 34-24 road loss to the fourth-ranked Buckeyes.

The Hawkeyes (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten) used a significant number of sets against Ohio State that featured three tight ends. That could continue Saturday when Iowa hosts Northwestern (4-3, 0-3).

Iowa State to stick with Richardson

Sports

October 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says sophomore quarterback Sam Richardson will start this week’s game against No. 19 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones initially listed Richardson and freshman Grant Rohach as co-starters against the Cowboys. But coach Paul Rhoads says Richardson will get the starting nod on Saturday.

Rhoads says Richardson’s knowledge of Iowa State’s offense was a key factor in that decision. Rhoads adds that Richardson needs to make smarter decisions and quicker judgments. Richardson, a redshirt sophomore, has started all six games for the Cyclones (1-5, 0-3). He has thrown for 1,255 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Boston officials discuss World Series security

Sports

October 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

BOSTON (AP) – Boston officials are asking people to take public transportation to World Series games between the Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals.  Mayor Tom Menino says he’s asking Red Sox fans to be responsible and respectful while cheering on the team. He’s also asking everyone to wear red on Wednesday to support the players.

Police Superintendent Daniel Linskey says Boston police have already met with bar owners and will meet with college and university officials to talk about curbing underage drinking and keeping students safe. He says there will be enhanced police presence for the first two games and everyone will be working if there is a clinching game in Boston.

Sports championship celebrations in Boston in the past decade have resulted in violence and even death.

Chiefs lone remaining unbeaten after Broncos loss

Sports

October 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It’s hard to find anybody in the Kansas City Chiefs locker room willing to think back to last season. Those memories have been purged for weeks, if not months. Kendrick Lewis remembers, though. The starting free safety recalls what it was like to win just two games and finish with the worst record in franchise history. All of which makes their 7-0 start this season feel that much sweeter.

The Chiefs are the lone unbeaten team left in the NFL after the Broncos lost to the Colts on Sunday night. They’re also the 32nd team to win their first seven games in the Super Bowl era, and that’s a good omen. The previous 31 all made the playoffs.

Lester to start Game 1 of World Series for Red Sox

Sports

October 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox left-hander Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. That’s the word on Monday from Boston manager John Farrell.

Farrell says he hasn’t decided on his entire lineup, but designated hitter David Ortiz will start at least once at first base when the series shifts to St. Louis for the middle three games. There is no DH allowed in the NL park, meaning Ortiz will have to play the field for just the seventh time this season.

The Red Sox worked out Monday, two days after eliminating the Detroit Tigers in Game 6 of the AL championship series. Game 1 of the World Series is Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
