August 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Bray threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns, and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Green Bay Packers 30-8 on Thursday night in a preseason finale nearly devoid of starters. Bray, an undrafted rookie out of Tennessee, outshined Chiefs backup Chase Daniel while giving starter Alex Smith the night off. Bray hit Junior Hemingway late in the first half for a touchdown, and then connected with Josh Bellamy and Frankie Hammond Jr. for TDs in the second half.

Vince Young had a rough game for the Packers in place of Aaron Rodgers, who likewise sat the game out. Young was just 13 of 29 for 121 yards and fumbled twice, losing one of them. B.J. Coleman was 2 of 7 for 19 yards on the few series he played for Green Bay.

August 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa junior Darius Stokes has been awarded a scholarship by coach Fran McCaffery. Coach Fran McCaffery says that Stokes, who has spent the past three seasons as a walk-on for the Hawkeyes, has earned a scholarship because of his energy, enthusiasm and hard work.

Stokes, a 6-foot-7 forward from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has played in 24 games over the past two seasons. His father, Greg Stokes, was an All-Big Ten player at Iowa in the mid-80s and his sister Kiah plays from Connecticut.

Iowa now has 13 scholarship players on its roster for 2013-14.

Bruce leads Reds’ 10-0 rout over Cardinals

Sports

August 29th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jay Bruce homered and had five RBIs and the Cincinnati Reds got a dominant effort from Homer Bailey to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-0 on Wednesday night and avoid a three-game sweep. The Reds came out swinging a few hours after Brandon Phillips’ expletive-filled tirade at a Cincinnati Enquirer reporter sparked by scrutiny of his .310 on-base percentage, and after manager Dusty Baker criticized his team for falling short while dropping four of five.

The Cardinals lead the NL Central by a half-game over Pittsburgh after losing for the third time in 12 games, and the Reds are 3½ games back.

Bailey capped a six-run first against Adam Wainwright with the Reds’ sixth hit and his first RBI of the season. He allowed five hits in 7 1-3 innings with seven strikeouts and is 4-0 in his past six starts.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals promoted a fresh arm from the minors for the second straight day, recalling rookie right-hander Michael Blazek from Triple-A Memphis and demoting rookie right-hander Carlos Martinez. The 24-year-old Blazek has appeared in 10 games with St. Louis with an 8.31 ERA in 8 2-3 innings before Wednesday night’s game against the Reds. He’s 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA and two saves in 19 games at Memphis.

The 21-year-old Martinez is one of the franchise’s top pitching prospects and earned his first career victory on Monday, working two innings of relief. The Cardinals sent rookie Tyler Lyons to Memphis on Tuesday, a day after lefty started against Cincinnati, and promoted right-handed reliever Fernando Salas.

Chiefs’ Dorsey gets chance to see Packers again

Sports

August 28th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Everything that John Dorsey has done to mold the Kansas City Chiefs since becoming their general manager in January has been influenced by a career spent with the Green Bay Packers. He’ll get a chance to catch up with old friends Thursday night.

Dorsey played for the Packers in the 1980s before rising up the scouting ranks, eventually becoming director of football operations. He was hired as the Chiefs’ GM in January. Now, Dorsey will be using a preseason game against the Packers to make some final roster evaluations ahead of Saturday’s deadline to reach the 53-player limit. The Packers likewise have several jobs still up for grabs ahead of their regular-season opener.

Hawkeyes to combat heat wave for opener

Sports

August 28th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa is taking a number of precautions to combat the excessive heat expected for Saturday’s football opener against Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes say they’ll have cooling stations available in every corner of Kinnick Stadium, with misting stations and cold towels available.  The school will also allow fans to bring in multiple sealed bottles of water – and it has cut the price of bottled water for sale inside Kinnick to $2.

Carver-Hawkeye Arena, the Recreation Building and the Field House will also be open at 8 a.m. for fans seeking relief from the heat. The Iowa Department of Health is warning those with pre-existing medical conditions to watch or listen to the game from home, with a high of 95 degrees expected Saturday in Iowa City.

Program provides access to 7,600 acres of private land to hunt

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

August 28th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says eight new sites have been added to Iowa’s walk in public hunting access program, increasing the land available for hunting by nearly 600 acres. There are a total of 7,590 acres of private property on 48 sites available to hunters. The Iowa Hunting and Access Program (IHAP) is a partnership with Iowa landowners who agree to allow hunters access to the portion of their property enrolled in the program in exchange for habitat improvement on that land.

The newly enrolled land is spread across the state but all of the new sites are located in north central; an area of the state with the least amount of public hunting access sites in the past.  Hunting opportunities should be even greater this year as the habitat on the sites have had another year of development.  Site maps are available on the DNR’s website showing boundaries, which species would be most likely attracted to the habitat and the location of a comment box where hunters can leave their thoughts on the program.  Detailed information for each site can also be found on the hunting atlas http://programs.iowadnr.gov/maps/huntingatlas/.

Walk-in public hunting through IHAP is available between September 1st and May 31st. Areas are posted with signs, are regularly patrolled by Iowa DNR conservation officers and will be treated like public hunting ground, with the noted exception that it is private property. The DNR has a list of tips and guidelines hunters should follow and maps of the properties online at http://www.iowadnr.gov/Hunting/PlacestoHuntShoot/HabitatAccessProgram.aspx
