Chiefs place Commings on IR, sign McDougald

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs placed rookie safety Sanders Commings on injured reserve and signed Bradley McDougald to replace him on the roster heading into Sunday’s season opener at Jacksonville. Commings missed nearly all of training camp after breaking his left collarbone. The fifth-round pick from Georgia was put on IR with a designation to return, meaning he could return to the active roster at any time during the season.

McDougald made it through final cuts as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas, only to be waived Sunday when the Chiefs claimed seven other players off waivers. The Chiefs also signed offensive guard Rishawn Johnson to the practice squad Tuesday. He takes the place of Rokevious Watkins, who is serving a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Iowa shows progress despite loss in opener

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa lost again last weekend to MAC school Northern Illinois— its seventh straight dating back to 2012 and first in an opener in 13 years. But don’t mistake a loss for lost confidence. The Hawkeyes (0-1) showed signs that the misery of last season could eventually be a thing of the past, even in defeat.

New starting quarterback Jake Rudock played well. The running game showed signs of progress and Iowa’s defense appears to be in decent shape heading into Saturday’s game with FCS school Missouri State. Coach Kirk Ferentz says he saw a lot of “good things,” from both the offense and defense.

Police say woman at UI game tried to enter field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a woman trying to get onto the field before the University of Iowa’s opening season football game had a blood alcohol content that was more than four times the legal limit to drive.  The university’s Department of Public Safety says 22-year-old Samantha Lynne Goudie, of Iowa City, tried to enter the playing field about an hour before the game against Northern Illinois University on Saturday. She was taken to the prisoner staging area at Kinnick Stadium.

Campus police say Goudie was unsteady on her feet and a preliminary breath test showed her blood-alcohol level was .341.  Goudie was charged with public intoxication. More than a dozen people were arrested during campus police’s game-day operations.

Red Cross offers first aid courses focused on sports injuries

News, Sports

September 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Back-to-school means back to practice season for Iowa’s student athletes. Some of those students will end up in emergency rooms with sports-related injuries. Liz Dorland, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, says that type of injury accounts for 20-percent of all E-R visits for young people. The agency is offering a series of courses which coaches, parents and others can take so they’ll know how to treat sport-related injuries.

Dorland, at the Red Cross office in Omaha/Council Bluffs, says there are several courses available in the online series, including one specifically geared for teens and adults who will coach at any level.  “It’s very highly-skilled,” she says. “It’s developed with the National Federation of State High School Associations. The course covers first aid skills, including breathing emergencies and serious injuries to muscles, bones and joints. We encourage everyone, but coaches especially, to take the CPR/AED course that we offer as well.”

Dorland says the courses were developed to inform those who are involved in sports to be prepared for emergencies. One class is labeled as the family first aid/CPR course. “Participants will be able to learn how to treat any type of cardiac event, breathing, first aid emergencies, until help arrives,” she says.

There is also a First Aid App that is free to download on smartphone and tablets which gives users instant access to information on how to handle all types of first aid emergencies. More information is available by logging on to redcross.org.

Chiefs use waiver wire as roster overhaul goes on

Sports

September 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs began working in earnest Monday for their season opener at Jacksonville while also trying to work seven new players into the fold. The Chiefs were awarded them off the waiver wire Sunday, while also cutting loose six more as they continue to churn the bottom of the roster. Because they had the No. 1 selection in the NFL draft, the Chiefs also had the top priority in claiming players released by other teams.

The series of moves they made Sunday resulted in a 53-man roster with 30 newcomers heading into Sunday’s opener against the Jaguars. That includes all three quarterbacks and all the tight ends. “If there’s a time to do it,” GM John Dorsey said of the overhaul, “the time is now.”

Cardinals’ Molina leaves game with sore wrist

Sports

September 3rd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina left a game against the Cincinnati Reds with a sore left wrist. Molina grounded out and flied out in his two at-bats before being replaced by Rob Johnson for the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday. The Reds led 6-2. Molina missed 14 games with a strained right knee. He was activated off the disabled list on Aug. 15 and had started 15 games, with manager Mike Matheny going easy on him to prevent a recurrence of the knee problem.

The Cardinals also were missing right fielder Carlos Beltran for the start of their four-game series. Beltran missed his second straight game with a stiff back. Matheny held him out as a precaution. St. Louis and Pittsburgh were tied for the NL Central lead.
