ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals cleanup hitter Allen Craig says he’s recovered from a foot injury and ready to be put on St. Louis’ World Series roster. Craig, who hasn’t played since Sept. 4 because a left mid-foot sprain, said Sunday he anticipates being the designated hitter in Wednesday night’s Series opener at Boston. Craig batted a major league-best .454 during the regular season with runners in scoring position.

The Cardinals worked out at Busch Stadium on Sunday, two days after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL pennant.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rosters turn over so quickly these days, the St. Louis Cardinals used only six players from their 2011 World Series roster in this year’s NL championship series. The NL champions got contributions from 20 rookies this season, many in starring roles on a team that led the NL with 97 wins and then reached the World Series for the second time in three years.

Lance Lynn is the only pitcher left from two years ago, joined against the Dodgers by position players Matt Carpenter, Daniel Descalso, David Freese, Matt Holliday and Jon Jay. Allen Craig, sidelined by a foot injury since early September, is expected to join them in the Series.

When the Cardinals were swept by Boston in the 2004 Series, Michael Wacha and Trevor Rosenthal were in middle school. St. Louis worked out Sunday after a day off to savor the NL pennant. They leave for Boston on Tuesday, and just a handful have firsthand experience of the ill-fated 105-win team that got swept by the Red Sox.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jamaal Charles ran for 86 yards and a touchdown, Alex Smith also ran for a score and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the banged-up Houston Texans 17-16 on Sunday to remain unbeaten. The Chiefs (7-0) were forced to punt the ball to Houston with 1:46 left in the game.

But after Case Keenum threw an incompletion on first down, the young quarterback was stripped by linebacker Tamba Hali at his 2. Derrick Johnson recovered the fumble for the Chiefs. Smith simply kneeled on it from there as time ran out, allowing Kansas City to extend the second-best start in franchise history. The 2003 team began the season 9-0.

Keenum, making his first NFL start in place of the injured Matt Schaub, threw for 271 yards and a touchdown for the Texans (2-4). But he didn’t get much help from his run game after Arian Foster left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) – Kevin Earl’s 1-yard touchdown run in overtime led South Dakota over Northern Iowa 38-31 in a Missouri Valley Conference showdown Saturday.    Earl’s overtime plunge capped a huge day, as he ran for two touchdowns and threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Coyotes (4-3, 3-1) back from a 21-point third quarter deficit to tie the game with five seconds in regulation.

Northern Iowa (4-3, 0-3) scored three consecutive touchdowns in the second and third quarters to put the Panthers up 28-7 late in the third. But South Dakota stormed back as Earl completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Riley Donovan, then ran eight yards for a score, before leading the 7-play, 58-yard game tying drive, which ended in a 3-yard scoring strike to Terrance Terry as time wound down.

David Johnson led Northern Iowa with 181 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Evan Williams added two rushing touchdowns in Cedar Falls.

WACO, Texas (AP) – Bryce Petty threw for 343 yards and two touchdowns, Antwan Goodley had 182 yards receiving and two scores, and No. 12 Baylor tied a school record with its 10th straight win, beating Iowa State 71-7 on Saturday night.  The Bears, who came in averaging 70.5 points in four home games but were slowed in a come-from-behind win at Kansas State last week, led 37-0 at halftime and narrowly missed its first shutout win in the Big 12. Baylor (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) matched its 10-game winning streak from 1936-37.

Iowa State (1-5, 0-3) was without quarterback Sam Richardson while Baylor pulled away in the second quarter. The Cyclones had nine first downs and three turnovers. The Cyclones scored with 47 with seconds left on a 27-yard pass from Grant Rohach to DeVondrick Nealy. Corey Coleman returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to give Baylor its fourth 70-point game this season.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Carlos Hyde ran for 149 yards, including 106 yards and two touchdowns in the second half, to lead No. 4 Ohio State to a 34-24 victory over Iowa on Saturday.  It was the Buckeyes’ 19th consecutive victory, the most in the nation and tying the second-best streak in school history.  But it didn’t come easy.

The Hawkeyes (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten) dominated offensively in the first half and led 21-14 at the break behind the passing of Jake Rudock and running of Mark Weisman and Damon Bullock.  Hyde tied it with the first rushing TD against Iowa this season on Ohio State’s first drive of the third quarter, and the Buckeyes took over.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – At the trade deadline in July, the Cardinals appeared to be in the market for starting pitching. Instead, St. Louis stood pat and trusted their young arms.  That trust paid off – in a trip to the World Series. Led by NLCS MVP Michael Wacha, the group of 20-somethings has formed a core of one of the best staffs in the major leagues.

Wacha outpitched Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw twice in the NLCS, including in a 9-0 win in Game 6 on Friday night. Ace Adam Wainwright says the kid has been so good he wouldn’t be surprised if Wacha was on the mound for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday at the winner of the ALCS between Boston and Detroit.
