Yankees beat Cardinals 7-4, take series

Sports

May 29th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hiroki Kuroda snapped an 11-start road winless streak and Jacoby Ellsbury helped build an early lead with three hits and three RBIs his first three at-bats in the New York Yankees’ 7-4 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.

John Ryan Murphy added two RBIs for the Yankees, who took two of three without an appearance from Mark Teixeira, nursing a sore wrist, and wrapped up a 5-4 trip. Catcher Brian McCann made his first career start at first base in the finale.

Shelby Miller allowed a career-worst seven runs and nine hits in five innings for St. Louis. Kolten Wong had a career-best four hits and an RBI, Matt Carpenter doubled twice with an RBI and Yadier Molina had two hits and two walks, but the Cardinals stranded 13 runners.

Big 12 making slight change to football tiebreaker

Sports

May 29th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Big 12 Conference is subbing out part of its football tiebreaker process. Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said Wednesday that the new College Football Playoff poll will replace the old BCS standings as a potential tiebreaker if three or more teams have the same conference record. The first potential tiebreakers remain the records of the tied teams compared against each other, and then against the next highest-placed teams in the conference.

If those don’t settle things, the highest-ranked team in the first College Football Playoff poll after Big 12 regular season play would represent the league as champion. The only exception is if the two highest-ranked tied teams are within one spot of each other in the playoff poll, then the head-to-head result of those teams would break the tie.

Documents: UNI fired assistant coach over tickets

Sports

May 28th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Documents show the University of Northern Iowa has fired an assistant football coach after learning he sold complimentary tickets. The Des Moines Register obtained documents from UNI through Iowa’s open records law that show the university became aware in October 2012 that a coach had sold tickets to prospective player’s relatives and kept the money. UNI fired the coach, whose name wasn’t released.

A report filed by UNI with the NCAA in July 2013 stated the school would respond to the matter by not giving complimentary tickets to high school or two-year college coaches for the first two games of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The school also won’t host a UNI football camp in summer 2014.

The NCAA agreed with the penalties that UNI imposed on itself.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa says wide receiver Blake Haluska will miss his senior season and that receiver A.J. Jones and running back Barkley Hill have left the program. Haluska, a Carroll, Iowa native, is out for next season with a shoulder injury. He joined the Hawkeyes as a walk-on in 2010 and played in three games last year without making a catch.

Jones is from Dallas. He redshirted as a freshman last season. Hill grew up in Denver, Iowa. He missed the 2012 season with a knee injury and didn’t play as a redshirt freshman in 2013.

Christofferson Signs Pro Contract in Austria

Sports

May 28th, 2014 by Jim Field

AMES, Iowa – Former Cyclone women’s basketball standout Hallie Christofferson has signed a professional contract with the Flying Foxes in Vienna, Austria.

“I am very happy to have the opportunity to go to Austria and continue playing basketball,” Christofferson said. “I have only heard good things about the country and I can’t wait to see it for myself.”

Christofferson had a standout career with the Cyclones after finishing her senior season sixth all-time in scoring (1,709) and eighth all-time in rebounds (762). Christofferson, a forward from Hamlin, Iowa, led the team in scoring for the second-consecutive year with 18.4 points per game. She also averaged 7.2 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent from the field en route to her second-consecutive All-American campaign.

The Flying Foxes are part of the Austrian Women Basketball League, where the team completed a perfect 18-0 season in league play and claimed a league championship.

Christofferson departs for Vienna in September as the AWBL season runs September through April.
