CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs clinched a postseason series at Wrigley Field for the first time ever, getting home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez in beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 Tuesday to win the NL Division Series in four games. A day after hitting a postseason-record six homers, the Cubs hammered their way into the NL Championship Series by taking the best-of-five set before a rollicking crowd.
Manager Joe Maddon’s bunch of wild-card Cubs will face the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers-New York Mets matchup. The Mets took a 2-1 lead into Game 4 Tuesday night. The Cubs last reached the NLCS in 2003, when they lost in seven games to the Marlins. Chicago dropped those final two at home, including the infamous Bartman defeat in Game 6.
Wrigley Field hosted its first Cubs game in 1916, eight years after they last won the World Series.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa senior defensive end Drew Ott has torn the ACL in his right knee and is done for the season. Ferentz says tests confirmed Ott’s injury on Monday. Ott left last week’s 29-20 win over Illinois in the third quarter. He came back out for the fourth quarter on crutches.
Ott is one of the best players for the 17th-ranked Hawkeyes (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten). He ranks sixth in the Big Ten with five sacks despite an arm injury earlier this season. Freshman Parker Hesse will start in place of Ott on Saturday against No. 20 Northwestern.
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Men’s Basketball duo of Monté Morris and Georges Niang have earned spots on a pair of preseason award watch lists, announced today by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Morris, a junior from Flint, Michigan, is on the Bob Cousy Award watch list, which honors the nation’s top point guard. Morris was a finalist for the award last season after finishing second on the team with 11.9 points and leading the Big 12 with 5.2 assists and a nation-best 4.63 assist-to-turnover ratio. Along with Jameel McKay, Morris also was named preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention.
Niang has been listed on the Karl Malone Award watch list, an award given to the nation’s best power forward. He was a finalist for the honor last season while averaging 15.3 points and earning All-America accolades. Niang has also been named to the preseason All-Big 12 team. The Methuen, Massachusetts, native, returns for his senior season fifth among active NCAA Division I players in scoring (1,510) and the only player with 1,500 points, 450 rebounds and 300 assists.
The Cyclones open the regular season on Nov. 13 against Colorado in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – An autopsy has determined that former NFL and Iowa football player Tyler Sash died from an accidental overdose involving two pain medications. The Iowa state medical examiner’s office said Tuesday that a recent shoulder dislocation and a history of chronic shoulder pain were “significant conditions” in the 27-year-old’s death.
Additional studies will look at whether Sash suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a brain disease caused by repetitive trauma that has been found in former NFL players. The results will be available in several months.
Sash was found dead in his Oskaloosa, Iowa home Sept. 8. The autopsy determined the death was from an “accidental mixed drug toxicity involving methadone and hydrocodone.” Sash was a standout safety at Iowa and won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2012.
The Big 10 Conference announced there player of the week honorees following games on October 10th. Iowa Running Back Jordan Canzeri won the Offensive Player of the Week Honor.

Officials with the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission (IRGC) and Iowa DCI (Division of Criminal Investigation) are continuing to investigate positive performance-enhancing drug tests at Bluffs Run Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs. According to the Daily NonPareil, in late September, two dogs tested positive for ractopamine, a drug believed to increase muscle mass, open airways for oxygenation and decrease fat. Officials have not determined how the dogs ingested the drug.
Brian Ohorilko, administrator with the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, said the two greyhounds that tested positive for ractopamine, following a race.The positive test at Bluffs Run followed failed tests by 12 greyhounds at Iowa Greyhound Park in Dubuque. The Iowa State University diagnostic lab found the drug in dry food given to the dogs in eastern Iowa.
Officials in the greyhound community said that would be the case in Council Bluffs as well, but tests on dry food used at Bluffs Run came back negative. After the positive tests, both Council Bluffs dogs were taken out of competition while veterinarians determined the adverse affects of the drugs. Ohorilko said the drug – normally administered to livestock, including hogs and cattle – is known to cause heart tissue damage to greyhounds.
The administrator said both dogs were found to be healthy and have returned to racing.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. The star running back hurt his knee in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Chicago. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear. Earlier Monday, coach Andy Reid said “the worst case is the ACL is torn. That’s probably the direction it’s heading.”
Charles was making a cut deep in Bears territory on Sunday when his right knee buckled at a gruesome angle. The four-time Pro Bowl selection needed help from a trainer and linebacker Justin Houston to get off the field, never once putting any weight on the leg. Charles tore the ACL in his other knee four years ago, missing most of the season.
