Chiefs host Broncos tonight

Sports

September 17th, 2015 by admin

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Tonight’s NFL game is an AFC West matchup as the Kansas City Chiefs entertain the Denver Broncos. Each team is coming off a Week-1 victory. The Chiefs beat the Texans 27-20 and the Broncos dumped the Ravens 19-13.

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning has enjoyed great success in Thursday night games, passing for just under 36-hundred yards and 38 touchdowns. He didn’t have the best of games against the Ravens last week, leading many pundits to question just how much the veteran has left in the tank.

For the Chiefs, quarterback Alex Smith was 22 of 33 for 243 yards last Sunday with three touchdowns.

Before and during the game the Chiefs will honor their Super Bowl I and IV teams.

Catch all the action on KJAN AM 1220 and FM 101.1 as Mitch Holthus, Len Dawson, Kendall Gammon and the crew bring you the game on the Chiefs Radio Network.  Pregame at 6:00pm, kickoff set for  7:25pm.

Pitt’s Narduzzi still mum on starting QB vs Iowa

Sports

September 17th, 2015 by admin

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi is going to keep Iowa guessing.

Narduzzi declined to name a starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against the Hawkeyes, saying he’ll wait until just before kickoff to make his decision between Chad Voytik and Nate Peterman.

Narduzzi had said earlier this week he planned to reveal his choice on Thursday and that both players would see reps no matter who went out for the first series.

Peterman, a junior transfer from Tennessee, has the better numbers this season. But Voytik has started 15 consecutive games for the Panthers (2-0). Narduzzi said he would use practice as the barometer on who gets the nod, adding he was in no hurry.

Sports

September 17th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Tommy Pham homered twice and tripled to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Pham’s home runs came in the second and the fourth off Milwaukee starter Wily Peralta. It was the rookie’s third and fourth home runs of the season and first multi-homer effort in 43 career games.

Milwaukee Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun had lower back tightness and was scratched from Wednesday night’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Braun is batting .291 and leads the team with 25 home runs and 84 RBIs. He went 1 for 2 with two walks in Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to the Cardinals.

Funeral plans set for former Iowa basketball star Roy Marble

Sports

September 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

FLINT, Mich. (AP) – Funeral plans are set for Roy Marble, the high-flying guard who scored the most points in Iowa history as he helped the Hawkeyes become a national power in the mid-1980s. Marble died Friday in Grand Blanc, Michigan, after a long battle with cancer. He was 48. A memorial service is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at Beecher High School near Flint. A funeral service is 11 a.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church in Flint.

Marble was a prep star from the Flint area before leaving his home state to play for the Hawkeyes from 1986-89, scoring 2,116 points and headlining perhaps the best years the program has ever seen. Marble led Iowa to the NCAA Tournament four times, including an Elite Eight appearance in 1987.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Jason Heyward hit a line drive two-run homer in the 10th inning to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night. St. Louis has won consecutive games following a 2-8 skid and increased its lead in the NL Central to three games over second-place Pittsburgh. Kevin Siegrist (7-1) pitched the ninth and Trevor Rosenthal the 10th for his 44th save.

Carlos Martinez matched a season high by going eight innings. He struck out nine and gave up one earned run and four hits, as the team improved to 16-4 in his last 20 starts. Milwaukee lost its fourth straight game and has just 10 victories in its last 36 home games against St. Louis. Matt Carpenter led off the 10th and reached on an error on by first baseman Adam Lind. With one out, Heyward connected off Tyler Thornburg (0-2) for his 12th homer.
