Treynor Win Streak Ends in Quarterfinal Loss

Sports

July 28th, 2015 by Jim Field

Clear Lake starting pitcher Brock Adams only allowed three baserunners after the second inning on his way to a complete-game shutout as the No. 3 Lions dispatched the No. 6 Treynor Cardinals 5-0 in quarterfinals of the Class 2A tournament.

The Lions snapped Treynor’s 17-game winning streak with the win on Monday night.

Adams improved to 7-1 on the season as the senior right-hander lowered his season-ERA to 0.48. Adams worked around five hits and one walk while striking out five and making a bare-handed snag of a ground ball in the fifth inning.

The two teams combined for three successful pick-off attempts in the first inning and a half as both teams were scoreless until the Lions broke loose for two in the bottom of the third inning. Adams helped his own cause with a two out triple to drive in Matt Stephany, before being brought in by a Mitch Keeran RBI single up the middle, making it 2-0.

The Lions tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth, all of which were unearned.

The scoring started with a fielding error by Brett Daley at shortstop that allowed Parker Truesdell to reach second base as the ball was thrown into the first base dugout. Stephany then laced a single, driving in the sliding Truesdell. Leadoff batter Cooper Merrill then walked and scored on a wild pitch. Ben Mason topped off the scoring with an RBI double that chased starting pitcher Ben Chapin from the game.

Chapin (5-2) surrendered all five runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out two. Grant Mantell worked 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two while walking two.

Adams then retired nine of the next 10 batters as the Lions ran away with the game.

The Clear Lake offense was lead by Stephany who went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. He also made a diving play in left field as the Lions set down the Cardinals 1-2-3 in the sixth.

Treynor generated five hits, with the lone extra-base hit coming off of Tyler Radcliff’s bat, who went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

Wong’s slam paces Cardinals’ 4-1 win over Reds

Sports

July 28th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Kolten Wong hit a grand slam that backed Lance Lynn and led the St. Louis Cardinals over the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night. Wong connected on a 3-2 fastball from rookie Raisel Iglesias (1-3) with two outs in the fourth, putting St. Louis ahead 4-1. Wong’s second career grand slam easily cleared the right- field wall, landing in the home bullpen. The Cardinals have won six of seven, are a big league-best 64-35 record and lead the NL Central by 6 ½ games.

Lynn (8-5) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, improving to 7-3 against the Reds. He has won five of his last six decisions overall. Trevor Rosenthal earned his 31st save in 33 chances after getting two days off.

In other Card’s News…

Catcher Yadier Molina was replaced by a pinch hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning of a game against Cincinnati because he was feeling ill. Tony Cruz grounded out to end the fifth and then took over behind the plate against the Reds on Monday night. Molina doubled and scored on Kolten Wong’s grand slam in the fourth.

St. Louis Cardinals players arrived to un-air conditioned Busch Stadium on Monday. The problem was fixed by mid-afternoon, several hours before a game against the Cincinnati Reds. Manager Mike Matheny downplayed the situation, noting he grew up without air conditioning. Matheny joked that his wife sets the thermostat at “about 47 degrees” and that he thought they were “trying to raise penguins.” The problem was first noted during a news conference at adjacent Ballpark Village to promote the United States’ opening qualifier for the 2018 World Cup, in November.

July 27th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Women can work on developing their wild side by registering for the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop coming up Sept. 18-20. The weekend workshop is held at the Springbrook Conservation Education Center in Guthrie County. Julie Sparks, DNR Becoming an Outdoors-Woman coordinator, says “This workshop is an excellent opportunity for women 18 years or older to try a wide variety of activities they may never have had the chance to experience. We have top-notch instructors, our class sizes are kept small and the setting at Springbrook is beautiful, particularly in the fall.”

Workshop topics include basic fishing, fly fishing, birdwatching, archery, beginning shooting, basic motor boat skills, kayaking, survival skills, stand up paddling, Dutch oven cooking, basic camping and much more. The $150 registration fee covers food, lodging and materials for the workshop.

Women thinking about participating are encouraged to sign up soon, as many classes fill quickly. Brochures and registration forms are available online at www.iowadnr.gov/bow or by contacting Julie Sparks, at 515-725-8285 or julie.sparks@dnr.iowa.gov.
