Iowa State’s Tsalmpouris turning pro

Sports

August 18th, 2015 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State says basketball player Georgios Tsalmpouris is turning pro.

Tsalmpouris, a 7-foot-1 center from Katerini, Greece, was a late addition to the Cyclones roster last season.

Tsalmpouris was a project for former coach Fred Hoiberg. He played in just eight games as a freshman in 2014-15, averaging 1.4 points. The move was expected after Tsalmpouris returned to Greece this summer.

Tsalmpouris’s departure frees up a scholarship for new coach Steve Prohm, who will lose four key contributors following next season.

Piscotty scores go-ahead run, Cardinals beat Giants 2-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Stephen Piscotty tripled and scored the go-ahead run on Mark Reynolds’ groundout in the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Monday night. The run came a little too late for Michael Wacha, who allowed one run in seven innings with six strikeouts but missed a chance to become the majors’ first 15-game winner.

Yadier Molina hit his third homer leading off the fourth for St. Louis. The Giants tied it on Brandon Crawford’s two-out RBI triple in the sixth. The Cardinals have won nine of 12, ended the Giants’ four-game winning streak, and lead Pittsburgh by six games in the NL Central.

Kevin Siegrist (4-0) worked a perfect eighth against the top of the Giants order and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 37th save in 39 chances when pinch-hitter Buster Posey flied out to the wall in center.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Sprint car driver Kevin Swindell had a second surgery on his back Monday for two fractures suffered in a crash last week at Knoxville Raceway. A statement from Swindell’s family said “both surgeries have been successful.” Swindell is still undergoing tests for a spinal cord injury.

The 26-year-old driver was injured in a crash last Thursday in the lead-in races to the Knoxville Nationals. His car flipped at the start of a heat race. His family said they realize Swindell has a “long battle ahead, but Kevin has remained positive throughout the process and is prepared to fight to regain his health.”

Swindell is the son of famed sprint car driver Sammy Swindell. He is a four-time winner of the Chili Bowl Nationals, and has 30 starts on NASCAR’s Xfinity Series.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — John Lackey was dominant into the ninth inning and gave the St. Louis Cardinals an unexpected bonus with two hits and an RBI in a 6-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. Mark Reynolds’ three-run home run in the sixth put the Cardinals ahead by four and Randal Grichuk hit his 15th homer in the first. Rookie Stephen Piscotty had three hits and scored twice, helping the Cardinals win their eighth out of 10.

Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 and now has 4,193 career hits between the major leagues and Japan, surpassing Ty Cobb’s total that ranks second in history. Lackey (10-7) allowed two runs on nine hits in 8 1-3 innings to reach double figures in victories for the 12th time in 13 seasons — the exception being 2012, which was lost to injury. He has been especially good at home, going 8-3 with a 1.91 ERA. Brad Hand (2-3) allowed six runs on 11 hits in six innings.

Sports

August 16th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona’s Carson Palmer was flawless in a brief appearance, Kansas City backup Chase Daniel threw for three touchdowns and the Chiefs beat the Cardinals 34-19 in the teams’ preseason opener Saturday night.

Palmer, in his first game since tearing an ACL last Nov. 9, was 4 for 4 for 77 yards, directing a seven-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start the game before sitting down for the night. Palmer threw over the middle to Andre Ellington on a 57-play to highlight the seven-play, 80-yard scoring drive.

Arizona’s Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Alex Smith’s pass on the Chiefs’ first possession to set up a field goal to put Arizona up 10-0. The Kansas City reserves scored the next 31 points. Daniel was 17 for 29 for 189 yards in less than two quarters of play.

Iowa turns to Daniels at running back

Sports

August 15th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa will finally have a running back starting at running back this fall. After three years leaning on converted fullback Mark Weisman, the Hawkeyes intend to make junior LeShun Daniels Jr. their starter in 2015.

Iowa, which has typically tried to build its offensive philosophy around a strong running game, is hopeful that Daniels can be its first player to rush for over 1,000 yards since Marcus Coker in 2011.

The Hawkeyes open their season Sept. 5 against Illinois State.
