IWCC Reivers use spring to rebuild

Sports

April 12th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

There is plenty of opportunity and plenty of competition as the Iowa Western football team conducts spring drills. The Reivers lost nearly every starter off last year’s team that finished 10-2 and was third ranked in the final junior college poll. Iowa Western coach Scott Strohmeier says the spring is crucial for the freshmen who did not get much playing time last season.

Strohmeier says after going through one season and the off season training program the freshman always show added maturity. He says about 80 players are going through spring drills and some position groups are deeper than others.

The Reivers close out drills with a spring game on May sixth.

Chiefs DL Mike DeVito retires after 9 NFL seasons

Sports

April 12th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito is retiring after nine NFL seasons. DeVito, 31, announced his retirement Monday on Twitter, saying it was his wife, Jessie, who was most influential in his decision. The couple is expecting a second child. DeVito says: “I have people here that will expect me to be here and be a father and be a husband and a leader of my family.”

Known for his leadership in the locker room and his versatility — he played three positions on the line in 2012 — DeVito spent his first six seasons with the New York Jets, twice going to the playoffs. He then joined the Chiefs for the last three seasons, but appeared in only one game in 2014 after tearing his Achilles tendon.

DeVito had a career-high three sacks last season as the Chiefs rallied from 1-5 to make the playoffs.

Hall of Famer Lou Brock throw a strike to former teammate Ted Simmons on the ceremonial first pitch from halfway between the mound and the plate. The former base-stealing champ’s left leg was amputated below the knee in October, and he wears a prostheses.
