IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa walk-on Nicholas Baer has been awarded a scholarship by coach Fran McCaffery. Baer, who redshirted in 2014-15, was the most surprising player on Iowa’s roster. He broke through a deep class of fellow freshmen, all of whom were on scholarship, and averaged nearly five points a game. Baer scored 15 points in the Hawkeyes’ last game, an 87-68 NCAA Tournament loss to eventual national champion Villanova.

Baer will take up one of the scholarships freed up when Andrew Fleming and Brandon Hutton decided to leave the program after the season. Baer’s role should be expanded next season, as Iowa loses four seniors starters.

The St. Louis Cardinals traded left-handed pitcher Jayson Aquino to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations this morning.

Aquino was acquired by the Cardinals on a waiver claim from the Cleveland Indians on Dec. 9, 2015, and assigned to the Cardinals 40-man roster, before being designated for assignment and traded to the Orioles.  He did not make an appearance in any of the Cardinals Major League Spring Training games.

The Orioles become Aquino’s sixth organization since being signed as a non-drafted free agent out of the Dominican Republic by the Colorado Rockies in 2009.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A driver at I-80 Speedway and Eagle Raceway is using the hood of his race car to honor a fallen Omaha police officer. The Omaha World-Herald reports that driver Jim Cahill unveiled the tribute to officer Kerrie Orozco at Omaha Police Department’s northwest precinct on Wednesday. The fallen officer’s mother, Ellen Holtz, from Walnut, IA, christened the race car by spraying it with a bottle of champagne.

Orozco died May 20th, 2015, after she was shot by a suspect as police sought to arrest the fugitive on an assault warrant. Cahill’s four-cylinder, front-wheel-drive Chevy features a large portrait of Orozco, as well as Support Blue and Kerrie On logos.

Cahill plans to test the race car Friday and Saturday at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, NE.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Murray Wier, the first Iowa basketball player to be named a first-team All-American, died Wednesday in Georgetown, Texas. He was 89. The Ramsey Funeral Home, which confirmed Wier’s passing and is handling the funeral arrangements, says the cause of death is not yet known.

Wier, who grew up in Grandview, Iowa, was a four-year starter for Iowa from 1945-48. Wier averaged 21 points a game as a senior, becoming the first officially recognized single-season scoring champion in NCAA history, according to the Hawkeyes.

Wier went on to play four seasons of professional ball, including one year under Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach with the Tri-City Blackhawks. Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says Wier was “one of the all-time greats” of Iowa basketball.

Clarinda Lady Cardinal Relays

The Clarinda Lady Cardinal Relays were held Tuesday night but were cut short due to lighting in the area.  Results of completed events and teams scores can be seen below.

CAM got a win from Lindsey Dinkla in the 400m dash.  Taylor Sauers of Audubon was second in that event.

Exira-EHK’s top performer was Sydnee Young taking second in the 200m dash.

Adair-Casey’s Cale Billheimer was 7th in the 1600m run and 5th in the 3200m run.  Clay Billheimer was 7th in the 3200m.
