Cardinals OF Matt Holliday leaves game with leg cramp

Sports

April 26th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

PHOENIX (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday left Monday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a right leg cramp, it was announced during the game. Holliday was 1 for 2 with a triple through three innings.

He was replaced by Jeremy Hazelbaker in left field to start the bottom of the third. He grounded out to third base for the second out of the top of the third. The Cardinals say Holliday is day-to-day.

Segura powers Diamondbacks to win over Cardinals

PHOENIX (AP) — Jean Segura had four hits, including a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth inning, to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 12-7 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night. Segura’s homer came during a nine-run inning that made ace Zack Greinke a winner despite allowing seven runs. The Cardinals bullpen was rocked in the sixth after starter Jaime Garcia was removed with two runners on base.

Greinke (2-2) lasted 6 2/3 innings and gave up 11 hits. He’s surrendered 21 runs in five starts and has a 6.16 earned run average. Matt Bowman (0-1) gave up a run-scoring single to Chris Owings, his second RBI of the night, and Greinke helped himself by bouncing a single through a drawn-in infield that was expecting a bunt with two strikes.

Kevin Siegrist entered with one out and served up Segura’s fourth home run of the season, a line drive into the left field seats.

Iowa State recruit Malou to explore professional options

Sports

April 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State recruit Emmanuel Malou has filed the paperwork necessary to enter the NBA draft but has not hired an agent, preserving his college eligibility. Cyclones spokesman Matt Shoultz confirmed Malou’s decision on Monday.

The 6-foot-9 Malou was the highlight of coach Steve Prohm’s first recruiting class. He averaged 14.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 blocks as a freshman for Yuba College in California before transferring to Des Moines Area Community College to focus on academics.

Malou, who turned down Kansas, Arizona and others in favor of Iowa State, was expected to be a starter for the Cyclones if his grades are in order. Iowa State lost front court players Georges Niang, Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader to graduation.

Gyorko leads Cardinals hit parade in 8-5 win against Padres

Sports

April 25th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jedd Gyorko homered, tripled and singled, and rookie Aledmys Diaz had a homer among his three hits as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the San Diego Padres 8-5 Sunday to take two of three. Gyorko, traded from San Diego to St. Louis in December, had two chances to complete the cycle but flied out to left and grounded out to third in his final at-bats. Randal Grichuk had three hits and three RBIs for St. Louis.

San Diego’s bullpen imploded for the second straight game. Kevin Quackenbush allowed consecutive homers to Gyorko and Diaz in the sixth to tie it, and Brandon Maurer (0-1) gave up three runs in the eighth, including Matt Carpenter’s go-ahead, RBI triple with one out and Grichuk’s two-run double with two outs.

Kevin Siegrest (3-0) pitched the seventh for the win. Trevor Rosenthal pitched the ninth for his fifth save in as many chances.

Vincent named ‘Beautiful Bulldog’ and Drake Relays mascot

Sports

April 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 60-pound rescued English bulldog named Vincent has won the 37th annual Beautiful Bulldog contest at Drake University. The tongue-in-cheek contest Sunday featured 45 bulldogs dressed up in costumes.

It’s the opening event of the Drake Relays, a prestigious track and field meet to be held next week at Drake Stadium. Vincent, a brown and white pup who lives just up the road from the stadium, will serve as the meet’s mascot.

Vincent succeeds Tank, whose sturdy frame, gentle personality and camouflage outfit won over the judges in 2015.

Gyorko, Hazelbaker hit 3-run homers in Cardinals’ 11-2 win

Sports

April 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Rookie Aledmys Diaz had his first five-hit game, Jedd Gyorko and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit three-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 11-2 on Saturday night. Diaz had a two-run double in the ninth, while Gyorko homered off his old team and Hazelbaker snapped an 0-for-17 slump. Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty each had three hits, and Piscotty hit a solo homer in the sixth.

Gyorko and Hazelbaker homered off Carlos Villanueva, who pitched for the Cardinals last year before signing with the Padres as a free agent. Michael Wacha (2-0) and three relievers combined on a four-hitter. Kevin Quackenbush (1-1) allowed two runs and one hit in 1 1/3 innings for the loss.

Gyorko, traded to the Cardinals for outfielder Jon Jay on Dec. 8, reached the second deck in left field with a 436-foot shot, his third, with one out in the eighth.
