JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – New St. Louis shortstop Ruben Tejada got a hit and made a couple of slick plays in the field Sunday during the Cardinals’ 5-2 loss to the Miami Marlins. Tejada joined the NL Central champions Saturday, three days after being released by the Mets. Star Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta is expected to miss two to three months after having thumb surgery. St. Louis starter Mike Leake gave up one run and five hits in five innings.

Making his first start and second appearance of the season, Miami’s David Phelps allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out five in three innings. Matt Carpenter homered and doubled for the Cardinals. Christian Yelich had three hits for the Marlins, equaling his total for the spring entering the game.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Alex Caruso scored 25 points as Texas A and M overcame a 10-point deficit with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to come back for a 92-88 double overtime victory over Northern Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday night. The win puts the third-seeded Aggies (28-8) in the Sweet 16 for the third time in school history, the first since 2007.

Danuel House scored all 22 of his points in the second half and overtime, while Jalen Jones finished with 16 for Texas A and M — which has now won 10 of its last 11 games. Jeremy Morgan had career highs of 36 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers (23-13), who led 69-59 in the final minute of regulation before committing four turnovers in the final 29 seconds to spark the Aggies comeback.

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Hart scored 19 points and second-seeded Villanova advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2009 with an 87-68 rout of seventh-seeded Iowa on Sunday in the South Regional. Villanova’s senior class, led by Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu, made it to the tournament’s second weekend for the first time. They were upset in the round of 32 the last two seasons and didn’t make it that far as freshmen. The Wildcats (31-5) will meet third-seeded Miami on Thursday in Louisville, Kentucky.

There was no doubt in this one. Villanova led 54-29 at halftime and by as many as 34 points in the second half. The closest Iowa (22-11) got was 16 points in the final minutes.

(HawkeyeSports.Com says) It’s been 17 years since the University of Iowa men’s basketball team has advanced to the Sweet 16, but there is a chance that could change today (Sunday).  After Friday’s thrilling first-round victory over Temple, the 24^th ranked Hawkeyes return to Barclay’s Center for a second-round bout with the sixth-ranked Villanova Wildcats. A trip to the “Sweet 16” in Louisville is on the line.

If history between the Hawkeyes and Wildcats points to anything, you can expect another tough, back-and-forth battle. The last time these two programs met was in the title game of the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas. Villanova squeaked by with an 88-83 overtime victory in a game that saw eight lead changes.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free-agent shortstop Ruben Tejada to a one-year, $1.5 million guaranteed contract. Tejada hit .261 with 23 doubles, three homers and 28 RBIs with the New York Mets last year. His season ended when the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Chase Utley broke Tejada’s right leg with a takeout slide in the NL Division Series.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Northern Iowa took center stage at the NCAA Tournament late Friday night when Paul Jesperson’s buzzer-beating shot from half court ousted Texas in the opening round. Now the 11th-seeded Panthers (23-12) must quickly regroup if they hope to reach the Sweet 16 for the second time in school history when they face third-seeded Texas A and M tonight (Sunday).

Northern Iowa enters the second round having won 13 of its last 14 games since falling to 10-11 after four straight losses in January. Awaiting the Panthers are the Aggies (27-8), who defeated Green Bay in the opening round and have won nine of their last 10 games.

DENVER (AP) — Georges Niang scored 28 points and Iowa State kept Josh Hagins from any more second-half heroics in a 78-61 win over Little Rock in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The Cyclones (23-11) advanced to their second Sweet 16 in three years. They will play the Virginia-Butler winner in Chicago next weekend.

Niang, the winningest player (97) in Cyclones history and Iowa State’s only two-time All-American, was simply too much for the 12th-seeded Trojans (30-5) of the Sun Belt. For the second straight game, Hagins had just two points at halftime. Unlike last time, when he went off for 29 more in a double-overtime win against Purdue, Hagins added just six after the break.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Mookie Betts hit his fourth home run of the spring and Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run shot as the Boston Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Saturday. The game was called after five innings because of rain. Joe Kelly pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Red Sox, giving up five hits and striking out five. Carlos Peguero homered for the Cardinals with two outs in the fourth.

Michael Wacha went four innings for the Cardinals, allowing seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Of Wacha’s 30 starts in 2015, eight had weather-related delays totaling 7 hours and 15 minutes.
