Chiefs down 2 offensive lineman, likely Charles vs Jets

Sports

September 24th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will be without starting offensive lineman Parker Ehinger and backup Jah Reid, and likely without star running back Jamaal Charles for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets. Ehinger will miss his second straight game with a concussion. Reid is out with a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Charles was listed as doubtful for the Jets on Friday’s injury report, and it is becoming increasingly likely that the four-time Pro Bowl player will not play before the Chiefs’ bye. After the Jets, Kansas City visits the Steelers before getting a week off.

Charles has been practicing since training camp, but coach Andy Reid has been cautious when it comes to activating him for game day. He tore the ACL in his right knee in Week 5 last season.

Arrieta fans 10, Cubs down Cardinals 5-0 for 98th win

Sports

September 23rd, 2016 by admin

CHICAGO (AP) – Jake Arrieta struck out 10 in seven innings and the Chicago Cubs beat the sloppy St. Louis Cardinals 5-0 on Friday for their 98th victory, the most since they last played in the World Series in 1945.

Arrieta (18-7) allowed five hits and walked one, Anthony Rizzo had three hits and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs as the Cubs tied a team record with their 56th home win. They moved within one victory or one Washington loss of clinching home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs.

Chicago scored four runs in the first inning off Mike Leake (9-11) and dropped the Cardinals a game behind the Mets and Giants for the two NL wild-card berths.

Pedro Strop came off the disabled list to work the eighth, and Travis Wood and Carl Edwards Jr. finished the five-hitter.

Postville forfeits tonight’s football game to North Linn

Sports

September 23rd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Officials in the Postville School District are forfeiting tonight’s (Friday’s) football game, due to health concerns. Postville superintendent Tim Dugger. “We’ve had several cases of confirmed impetigo this week,” Dugger says. “In order to protect our students and protect the students of the North Linn School District, we have offered to cancel the game.”

Impetigo is a highly-contagious skin condition. It usually occurs in children under the age of five and is rarely found in adults. The superintendent says there is NO health threat to the general student population in his district. “The issue is with a few of the football players and the close quarters when it comes to athletics,” Dugger says, “so it is particularly confined to that group of students.”

Dugger says students who’ve contracted impetigo are undergoing the standard treatment. “They are on antibiotics and then we are requiring potential cases to be reviewed by a doctor,” Dugger says, “to be cleared by them.”

Health officials say the recovery time for impetigo is usually three days, so Dugger is confident all cases will be cleared by next week. According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, someone with impetigo is no longer contagious about 24 hours after they start taking antibiotics. The rash from impetigo typically heals without scarring. Postville’s homecoming game is NEXT Friday.
