Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones have moved on to this week’s 64th meeting in the series against Iowa. The Cyclones are looking to bounce back from a season opening 25-20 loss to Northern Iowa. It will be Campbell’s first taste of the rivalry with the Hawkeyes. Campbell says the Cyclones need to focus on getting better and not playing up their role as underdog.

Campbell has some history he can show his team. Two years ago the Cyclones opened with a loss to North Dakota State and two weeks later beat the Hawkeyes 20-17 in Kinnick Stadium and in 2007 the Cyclones lost to UNI 24-13 and the very next week beat Iowa 15-13. A decision Campbell and the Cyclone coaches must make this week is how often will they throw the direction of Iowa All American corner Desmond King.

This will be the first time Cyclone senior center Brian Bobek has played in this game but it is not his first involvement in a rivalry with the Hawkeyes. Bobek played at Minnesota before transferring to ISU. Bobek says while the Cyclones have moved on they have not forgotten about the mistakes that cost them on Saturday.

Iowa State quarterback Joel Lanning looks forward to the game. Lanning says the Cyclones will bounce back from the loss to UNI.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Adam Wainwright drove in three runs and survived five occasionally bumpy innings to pick up his first victory since mid-July as the St. Louis Cardinals drummed the staggering Pittsburgh Pirates 12-6 on Monday. Wainwright hit an RBI-double off Chad Kuhl (3-3) in the second and added a two-run single in the fourth as the Cardinals held on to the second wild card spot in the National League by sending the Pirates to their seventh straight loss.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid says running back Jamaal Charles is “a stretch” to play in their season opener against the San Diego Chargers following surgery last season to repair the ACL in his right knee. Reid acknowledged Monday that the four-time Pro Bowl selection is still not ready for game action, even though he’s been practicing for several weeks. Charles did not play in any of the preseason games.

The Chiefs kept Knile Davis as their third running back behind Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware over the weekend, giving them insurance if Charles is unavailable. The trio filled in quite admirably when Charles was hurt in a Week 5 loss to the Chicago Bears.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Chiefs claimed linebacker Sam Barrington and offensive tackle Bryan Witzmann off waivers Sunday and made roster space for them by waiving linebacker Ramik Wilson and offensive lineman Jordan Devey. Barrington had been with the Packers and Witzmann had been with the Cowboys. The Chiefs were looking to upgrade the linebacker spot after Josh Mauga sustained a season-ending hip injury.

Wilson was a fourth-round draft pick who started two games a year ago. Kansas City also filled out its practice squad by signing linebackers Terrance Smith and Tyrell Adams; offensive linemen Daniel Munyer and Jarrod Pughsley; defensive backs Shak Randolph and Brock Vereen; wide receivers Frankie Hammond Jr. and Seantavius Jones; defensive tackle David King and running back Darrin Reaves.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Randal Grichuk and Kolten Wong homered, Carlos Martinez carried a shutout into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. Yadier Molina had two of the Cardinals’ five hits as they avoided being swept in Cincinnati for the first time since July 2012.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals activated switch-hitting catcher Brayan Pena from the 60-day disabled list and promoted rookie catcher Carson Kelly from Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis designated Memphis infielder Dean Anna for assignment to make room for Kelly and transferred pitcher Seth Maness (right elbow) from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Armstrong Junior ran for two touchdowns and threw a perfect deep ball to Alonzo Moore for another, and Nebraska pulled away in the second half to defeat Fresno State 43-10 Saturday night. The Cornhuskers pounded away at the Bulldogs with runs on 51 of their 64 plays, and Devine Ozigbo ran for a career-high 103 yards and two touchdowns in Lincoln.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Fifth-ranked LSU suffered its first opening day loss in 12 years under coach Les Miles as Rafael Gaglianone drilled a 47-yard field goal with 3:47 left in Wisconsin’s 16-14 triumph over the Tigers. Corey Clement ran for 86 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries for the Badgers, whose defense blanked the Tigers deep into the third quarter. LSU tailback and Heisman Trophy hopeful Leonard Fournette ran for 138 yards on 23 carries but limped off on his final carry, a 15-yard run with less than two minutes left.

In Pacific Coast League baseball, Saturday, the Iowa Cubs downed Colorado Springs 5-t0 1, while Omaha fell to Oklahoma City by a score of 3-to 0.

In Major League Baseball: Eric Hosmer hit his career-high 20th homer, Yordano Ventura pitched into and out of trouble, and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers Saturday night. Ventura improved to 7-0 against the Tigers, including three wins this season.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Zack Cozart hit a pair of doubles during run-scoring innings that included St. Louis misplays, and the Cincinnati Reds sent the Cardinals to their third straight loss, 9-1 Saturday. The Cardinals have lost seven of 11. They’re still in position to get the NL’s second wild-card spot, staying ahead of the Mets, Pirates and Marlins.
