Spartans and Cougars prepare for important district clash Friday

Sports

October 13th, 2016 by admin

The Exira-EHK Spartans and CAM Cougars will hit the gridiron Friday night in Exira with second place in the district on the line. Both teams come into the game with 4-3 overall records and 4-1 marks in 8-man, District 7 play.  CAM Cougar Head Coach Joe Wollum knows his team has a tough challenge on their hands but says they are excited for the opportunity.

The Cougars are led by youth with Junior Quarterback Thomas Hensley throwing for 1,464 yards and 22 touchdowns. Hensley’s favorite target is Sophomore Preston Murphy who has 42 catches for 791 yards and 10 scores. Sophomore Mitchell Williamson brings toughness to both sides of the ball at running back and defensive line.  Coach Wollum likes how his team has grown over the course of the season.

Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen said a big key to having success against the Cougars will be containing Hensley and making sure tackles when they get the chance. The Spartans lost on the road last week to top-rated Fremont-Mills and Head Coach Tom Petersen says his team’s intensity needs to improve this week.

Exira-EHK is more veteran led with Seniors Drew Buckholdt and Connor Westergaard at the Running Back and Quarterback positions. Coach Petersen knows the players don’t need much motivation especially with it being Senior night for a group that has worked really hard to improve.

We’ll have coverage of the Cougars and the Spartans on Friday night.  Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call of the game from the top of the hill in Exira.  Listen in on AM1220, FM101.1, online at kjan.com, and on the mobile app. You can also catch live streaming video on the TV page at kjan.com. Catch our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00pm followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service Pre-Game show at 6:30pm and Kickoff at 7:00pm.

Iowa’s Boettger tackles move to guard

Sports

October 13th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa junior Ike Boettger says when he was approached about moving from right tackle to left guard his response was “let’s do it”. The Cedar Falls native was part of an a reshuffled offensive line that helped the Hawkeyes rush for 179 yards in a 14-7 victory at Minnesota. Boettger says with the exception of center, the linemen are all interchangeable. (click on the left side of each audio bar to listen)

Boettger feels the offensive line made progress after the changes.

Boettger had not played guard since practice during his redshirt freshman season and was asked this week if he will be there permanently.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says none of the players involved in the changes were against the move.

Ferentz says says they are simply trying to find the right combination to make the offense go.

Veteran guard court leads Iowa State basketball team

Sports

October 13th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A veteran guard court is expected to lead the way for the Iowa State basketball team this season. Senior guard Monte Morris returns for a team that lost several key players off last year’s team that finished 23-12 and made a second straight appearance in the Sweet-16. Morris spurned the NBA Draft and is the Big 12 preseason player of the year. (click on the left side of each audio bar to listen)

That’s ISU coach Steve Prohm, who enters his second year at the helm. Matt Thomas returns as does Naz Mitrou-Long, who redshirted last season with a hip injury, and Prohm says Deonte Burton is poised for a big senior year.

Prohm says the Cyclones still want to push the tempo on offense but this team will have a different style on defense.

Prohm says the Cyclones need to do a better job of limiting easy baskets.

The Cyclones open with an exhibition game on November 6 against the University of Sioux Falls.

Chiefs’ Justin Houston cleared for football-related workouts

Sports

October 13th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston has been cleared to resume football activity for the first time since having surgery to repair the ACL in his left knee in February. Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder said Wednesday that Houston visited Dr. James Andrews on Oct. 3, the day after a loss in Pittsburgh, and was given clearance to do football-related workouts. The Chiefs were off last week.

Houston cannot be removed from the physically unable to perform list until next week, so the four-time Pro Bowl linebacker must continue to do his workouts away from the rest of the team. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he will evaluate Houston on a day-by-day basis, but acknowledged he could join practices next week. There still is no timetable for his return to games.

Big Ten coaches comment on early signing proposal

Sports

October 12th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — Big Ten coaches appear to be largely in favor of last week’s proposals by the Division I council that would create early signing periods in June and December, instead of in February. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says that to him, “it makes perfect sense.”

At least two coaches, Maryland’s DJ Durkin and Ash, though, don’t want an early signing period earlier than December. Ash says he doesn’t think it’s a “good path.”
