ST. LOUIS (AP) — Marcell Ozuna and Jose Martinez hit two-run homers, rookie Jack Flaherty pitched into the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 5-2. Jedd Gyorko added a one-out home run in the eighth.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A little more than a year after a life-threatening brain injury, Daniel Poncedeleon is ready to make his major league debut. The St. Louis Cardinals bought the 26-year-old right-hander’s contract from Triple-A Memphis 13 months after a line drive struck Poncedeleon in the right temple, fracturing his skill during a game against the Iowa Cubs. Poncedeleon underwent an emergency surgery to stop bleeding from his brain and weeks of rehab and inactivity.

Racing fans to flock to Newton this weekend

The Iowa Speedway in Newton will host its first races of the year this weekend. David Hyatt, who became president of the Iowa Speedway in February, says the venue’s campgrounds will open on Thursday at noon.
“We’re going to see the motor homes pulled in, we’re going to see the flags start flying, and a really strong opening weekend of racing,” Hyatt says. Races are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. A 200-lap NASCAR Camping World Trucks Series race will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. “The main event on Sunday, Father’s Day, we’ll have the XFinity Series,” Hyatt said.

Sunday’s 250-lap race starts at 4 p.m. There are many other activities planned, including a post-race concert on Saturday from the rock band Survivor – which scored several hits in the 1980s. The Iowa Speedway, which first opened in 2006, will have two other race weekends this year. July 7-8 will feature the Indy Car Series and July 27-28 will involve another NASCAR XFinity Series race. The seven-eighths of a mile (7/8 mile) track in Newton was designed by NASCAR Hall-of-Famer Rusty Wallace. The Iowa Speedway has a capacity for around 30,000 spectators.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Chapman homered leading off the eighth, moments after shortstop Marcus Semien’s defensive gem, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 3-2. Stephen Piscotty and Jonathan Lucroy both drove in runs for the A’s, who squandered numerous scoring chances before Chapman came through with a solo home run off Royals reliever Jason Adam.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Center fielder Billy Hamilton made a bunch of key defensive plays and the Cincinnati Reds ended their 13-game losing streak to St. Louis, beating the Cardinals 6-3. Hamilton threw out two runners, then made outstanding catches against the wall in the eighth and ninth innings. He also tripled and scored twice. The Cardinals’ overall winning streak against Cincinnati was their longest since the 1930-1931 seasons. The Reds had lost 11 straight home games to St. Louis.

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Clint Bowyer won his second NASCAR Cup Series race of the season when the event at Michigan was called early because of rain. Bowyer beat out Kevin Harvick on a restart to begin the third stage. Then the race went under caution when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. went into the wall. Rain put a stop to the race.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Tom Lehman was standing outside of a Des Moines-area makeup shop waiting for his daughter/caddie when he got the call to head back to Wakonda Club. Lehman told Rachael Chapman to pay her bill at Sephora as quickly as possible _ because dad had a trophy waiting for him at the course. Lehman, the second-round leader, took the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic after weather washed out the final round.

PGA Tour Champions in Iowa washed out, Tom Lehman wins

Sports

June 10th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Second-round leader Tom Lehman has been declared the winner of the PGA Tour Champions event in Iowa after weather washed out Sunday’s final round.

Principal Charity Classic officials had delayed the start of the third round by nearly five hours because of bands of light but persistent rain in central Iowa before calling the event.

Lehman shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead over Bernhard Langer, Glen Day, Woody Austin and Scott Parel.

From neighboring Minnesota, Lehman finished in the top 10 in each of his first six appearances in Iowa without ever winning the event. He finished with a 131 total at Wakonda Club.
