D-Backs spoil Cards home opener

Sports

April 6th, 2018 by admin

ST. LOUIS (AP) Robbie Ray was ready to make a new memory in St. Louis.

The left-hander struck out nine over six innings and the bullpen closed out a two-hitter, helping the Diamondbacks spoil the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener 3-1 on Thursday night.

Arizona improved to 6-1 for the second straight season and tied a franchise record for its best seven-game start. The team was also 6-1 in 2000.

St. Louis dropped its first home opener since 2015.

Ray (2-0) gave up one run on two hits and five walks. He was making his first appearance at Busch Stadium since being knocked out of a game by a line drive off his head on July 28, 2017.

Yadier Molina had a run-scoring double in the fourth for the Cardinals, who have lost two of three.

Brad Boxberger picked up his third save in three chances. Four Arizona relievers were perfect except for an error by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt in the eighth.

Adam Wainwright (0-1) came off the 10-day disabled list to make the start for St. Louis. He gave up four hits and three runs over 3 2/3 innings. Wainwright struck out three and walked four. He had been slowed since pulling his hamstring late in spring training.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cardinals: RHP Jack Flaherty was sent to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Wainwright on the roster. Flaherty struck out nine and gave up one run in five innings of a 5-4 loss in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

UP NEXT

St. Louis RHP Michael Wacha (0-1, 7.71) will face RHP Zach Greinke (0-0, 1.59) on Saturday in the second game of the three-game set. Snow is in the forecast for weekend.

Iowa Strikes Out 13 in 4-2 Win Over Grand View

Sports

April 5th, 2018 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Seven University of Iowa relievers scattered two hits over seven shutout innings to lead the Hawkeyes to a 4-2 victory over Grand View on Wednesday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

The win was Iowa’s 17th of the season, moving the team’s record to 17-9.

Sophomore Derek Lieurance, freshman Jack Dreyer, redshirt sophomore Kyle Shimp, freshman Cam Baumann, junior Shane Ritter, and senior Nick Nelsen all tossed hitless frames.  Baumann earned his first career victory, while Nelsen struck out four of the five batters he faced to notch his second save in as many games.

Eight Hawkeye pitchers limited Grand View to just four hits and the staff finished with 13 strikeouts and only one walk.

The Hawkeyes spotted the Vikings a 2-0 lead when starter Trenton Wallace gave up a wind-aided home run to Tyler Smith in the second inning before Iowa fought back to tie the game with single runs in the second and fourth frames.

Sophomore Kyle Crowl reached on a fielding error with one out in the second and advanced all the way to third base before scoring on Lorenzo Elion’s sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.  Iowa evened the score on another Elion RBI single in the fourth.

The Hawkeyes took the lead in the sixth when senior Austin Guzzo scored on a wild pitch after leading off the inning with a walk.  Freshman Brett McCleary drove in the final run on an RBI groundout to knock in Crowl.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Carlos Martinez pitched into the ninth inning and struck out 10, Yadier Molina homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the error-prone Milwaukee Brewers 6-0. Leadoff batter Dexter Fowler scored twice in the first three innings for the Cardinals, who beat their NL Central rivals a night after losing on a game-ending homer by Ryan Braun.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals plan to activate right-hander Adam Wainwright from the 10-day disabled list on Thursday to start their home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Wainwright has been sidelined by a strained left hamstring. Manager Mike Matheny says the team decided that Wainwright was ready after giving him one last checkup on Wednesday morning.

DETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals celebrated as if they had won a game a day after they did. They cheered when their scheduled game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed due to inclement weather conditions. With a postponement looming as a possibility, Kansas City breezed to its first victory of the season on a chilly, rainy day the previous day. The Royals beat the Tigers 1-0 in a game that lasted nine innings and was played in just 2 hours, 17 minutes.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Malik Newman plans to leave Kansas and enter the NBA draft after leading the Jayhawks to the Final Four in his only season playing for them. The sophomore guard says he plans to sign with an agent.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Scott Frost likes to harken to his playing days in the 1990s when the Tom Osborne-coached Nebraska teams used strength and brute force to impose their will on overmatched opponents. Upon his return as the new coach, Frost found a team that had gone soft. His first task was to get his players in shape. The winter strength and conditioning program was extremely taxing. The toughening-up process is continuing in spring practices.
