New Atlantic Activities Director to possibly be named at Atlantic School Board meeting tonight

News, Sports

April 11th, 2018 by admin

Atlantic may have a new Activities Director lined up for the departing Matt Alexander after tonight’s Atlantic School Board meeting.

A report from Carroll Broadcasting has indicated that Fort Madison Activities Director Andrew Mitchell has removed himself from consideration for that position at Carroll Community School District because he has accepted an offer to become Assistant High School Principal and Activities Director in Atlantic.

Atlantic Community School District Superintendent Steve Barber did not confirm or deny Mitchell being the guy when contacted by KJAN. He said they are in the process of determining that position and it would be discussed at tonight’s school board meeting.

The Atlantic School Board is set to meet at 5:30pm at the Atlantic High School Media Room.

Atlantic has been looking to replace current Assistant High School Principal and Activities Director Matt Alexander, who is leaving this summer to become the Superintendent of the OA-BCIG School District.

Team Standings

  1. Glenwood 308
  2. Atlantic 318
  3. Denison-Schleswig 355
  4. Maryville 359
  5. Clarinda 393
  6. Shenandoah 411
  7. Red Oak 416

Atlantic Scores: Ben Renaud 70 Medalist. Matt Gearheart 77 4th place, Cyle Renaud 86 15th place. Mason Goergen 88. Austin Alexander 85 12th place. Drey Newell 102.

Coach Ed DenBeste: “It was a pretty good day in Shenandoah.  I thought our team played pretty well.  Great to see Ben shoot an even par round today.  He made some key birdies today.  Good to see Matt play well.  Cyle had some struggles on a few holes.  Hit the ball well to start but then had a few struggles to finish.  Great to see Austin place today and have a pretty solid finish with 85.  Started with some high numbers but had a great stretch of pars.  Mason played well but wants to do better.  This was Drey’s first varsity experience and I know he is going to do better next match.  Next match at Fox Run.  Hope to have a lower score on Thursday.”

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter hit a two-run home run with no outs in the 11th inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3. Carpenter turned around a pitch from J.J. Hoover for the third game-ending homer of his career. It capped a night in which St. Louis rallied from one-run deficits in the ninth and 10th innings.

NEW YORK (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo both have been suspended one game for their dustup over the weekend. Molina, who bumped plate umpire Tim Timmons during the bench-clearing dispute, has appealed and can continue to play until the process is complete. The Cardinals were hosting Milwaukee. Lovullo, who also was fined, missed a game at San Francisco.

UNDATED (AP) — Mark McGwire says he could have hit 70 home runs in a season without taking performance-enhancing drugs. The current bench coach for the San Diego Padres tells The Athletic he regrets taking the drugs because he “didn’t need to.” McGwire hit a single-season record 70 home runs in 1998 while with the St. Louis Cardinals. McGwire says he wished there was testing when he played because there’s “no way” he would have used PEDs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Felix Hernandez pitched into the sixth inning, Guillermo Heredia homered and the Seattle Mariners bounced back from a blowout loss to Kansas City with an 8-3 rout of the Royals. Hernandez was shelled his last time out in San Francisco, but allowed three runs, six hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings against Kansas City.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have placed Alex Gordon on the disabled list with a torn hip labrum and recalled fellow outfielder Abraham Almonte from Triple-A Omaha. Gordon woke up with pain on Monday and was examined in greater detail Tuesday, and the results showed that an old tear he’d been playing through had worsened. Royals manager Ned Yost was hopeful the recovery time will be 10 days to two weeks.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas and North Carolina State are the latest schools to be swept up in a bribery scandal involving college basketball. A rewritten federal indictment released in the New York case alleges that an Adidas representative paid parents of athletes willing to commit to the schools. According to court papers, the Adidas representative, who no longer works for the company, agreed to funnel $90,000 to the family of a Kansas recruit and $40,000 to a recruit at North Carolina State.
