MAC Shootout begins today, busy high school hoops day on KJAN

We have a busy day of high school basketball coverage on the way for you today on KJAN. Three games are on the slate.

We’ll get started with a Western Iowa Conference doubleheader over at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. The Riverside Bulldogs will face the Underwood Eagles as part of the Jennie Ed Sports Med MAC Shootout. The girls game will get started at 4:00pm with the boys to follow at 5:30pm. Those are the first two games of a 12-game two day slate for the event. The nightcap tonight will have Glenwood facing St. Albert in a doubleheader. Here is a look a the schedule for the MAC Shootout.

After our coverage of the Underwood vs. Riverside double-dip we will head across town to Lewis Central High School where the Class 3A 5th-ranked Titans will host the Atlantic Trojans. Tip-off for that one is set for 7:30pm. Coverage cancelled of final game due to time change to 5:00pm. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call of both games from Council Bluffs today. CAM’s Williamson heading to Central College football

CAM senior Mitchell Williamson announced on Thursday that he plans to continue his academic and football career at Central College in Pella. Williamson has been a big contributor to multiple sports for the Cougars including football, wrestling, and baseball. Williamson made the announcement on social media Thursday.

Williamson is coming off a strong football season. He carried the ball 66 times for 396 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Cougars, and also caught 14 passes for 161 yards and another score. Williamson recorded 29.5 tackles this season as well.

Mitchell is currently in the midst of a wrestling season with the Atlantic/CAM squad.

Girls basketball rankings 1/10/2019

The IGHSAU released the latest girls basketball rankings on Thursday evening. Locally CAM checks in at #7 this week in Class 1A. Treynor is #2 in Class 2A and Panorama is at #6. In Class 3A Sheandoah is #13 and Creston is #15. In Class 4A Lewis Central is at #5, Denison-Schleswig #12, and Glenwood jumps in at #14.

Four Cyclones to compete in the 2019 NFLPA Collegiate Bow

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior stars Brian Peavy, Willie Harvey, D’Andre Payne and Matthew Eaton will compete in the 2019 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, Jan. 19 at the Rose Bowl.

Founded in 2012, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl gives prospective players the best opportunity to showcase their talents to potential employers and fans. Nearly 200 scouts, player personnel staff, general managers and head coaches from all 32 NFL teams are expected be in attendance to watch live practices, conduct player interviews and review tape.

Peavy, a native of Houston, Texas, is a four-time All-Big 12 selection and one of the best cornerbacks in Iowa State history. He ended his career with 47 starts, 289 tackles, six interceptions and six forced fumbles.

He was named First-Team All-American by Pro Football Focus in 2018 after leading the Cyclones in passes defended (9) and forced fumbles (3), ranking third in the Big 12.

A native of Hastings, Fla., Harvey was an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick at linebacker in 2018 after ranking second on the team in tackles (76), sacks (3.5) and TFL (9.0). Harvey ranks sixth in TFL (31.0) and eighth in sacks (12.5) on Iowa State’s career record book.

Payne was a three-year starter in the secondary for the Cyclones, earning honorable mention All-Big 12 accolades in 2017. The Washington, D.C., native ended his career with 31 starts, 130 tackles, 13.0 TFL and two interceptions.

Eaton started all 13 games at wide receiver in 2018, catching 27 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns.

Garret Jansen leaves Iowa football team

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – University of Iowa football student-athlete Garret Jansen will transfer from the Hawkeye program as a graduate transfer. The announcement was made Thursday by head football coach Kirk Ferentz.

“All of us are appreciative of Garret’s efforts and contributions,” said Ferentz. “Garret will seek a graduate program course of study that is unavailable to him here.”

Jansen is a defensive lineman from Pella, Iowa High School, who also contributed on special teams.

Purdue women knock off No. 17 Iowa 62-57

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Karissa McLaughlin and Dominique Oden scored 16 points apiece, Purdue went on a 16-3 run in the fourth quarter and held on to upset No. 17 Iowa 62-57 on Thursday night.
The Boilermakers (12-5, 3-1 Big Ten) were down by eight less than three minutes into the fourth quarter when they went on their run to lead by five with less than two minutes to go. Hannah Stewart’s layup with 36 seconds remaining pulled Iowa (11-4, 2-2) within 58-57.

McLaughlin was fouled with 11 seconds left and made the second of two free throws. On the inbound, Iowa turned the ball over and fouled and McLaughlin made two free throws for a 61-57 lead. After a Hawkeyes miss, Tamara Farquhar finished it off with a late free throw. Megan Gustafson, the nation’s leading scorer at 26.8, had 19 points and 13 rebounds for her 14th double-double before fouling out with 1:43 to play. Stewart had 17 points.

There were 14 ties and seven lead changes and Iowa’s late lead was the largest of the game.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Colts-Chiefs playoff game is hardly short of offensive firepower. Sure, quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Patrick Mahomes get all the publicity. But the Colts feature TY Hilton, Dontrelle Inman and Eric Ebron in a versatile offense, while the Chiefs counter with wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins and their own tight end, Travis Kelce.

TROY, Ala. (AP) — Troy has hired former Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey as its head football coach. The Trojans hired Lindsey away from Kansas, where he had been announced as offensive coordinator on Dec. 4. Lindsey, who spent the past two seasons at Auburn, replaces new West Virginia coach Neal Brown at one of the Sun Belt Conference’s top programs.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Matt Pile and Mitchell Hahn posted double-doubles and Hahn hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 8 seconds left in the game to lift Omaha to a 92-91 victory over North Dakota. Pile finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and Hahn tallied 17 points with 11 boards for his second.

Atlantic boys swimming takes down AL/TJ on Thursday

The Atlantic boys swimming team won 9 of 10 events and beat Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln/Thomas Jefferson 99-49 on Thursday.

Winners for the Trojans included Bryan York in the 200 and 400 freestyle events. He was also part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Tyson Parker was on that winning relay team and also the winning 200 freestyle relay team. He won the 200 individual medley as well. Alec Muff won the 100 butterfly and was on the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Avery Anderson was on the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams and won the 100 freestyle. Cole Sampson won the 100 backstroke. Drew Engler won the 100 breaststroke. They both were on the 200 medley team as well.

Tyson Parker was also a member of the 400 freestyle relay and winning 200 freestyle relay while also winning the 200 IM on his own. Alec Muff won the 100 butterfly and swam for the winning 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. Brayden Atkinson and Alex Sampson were winning relay members as well.
