The Atlantic boys basketball team rallied hard in the fourth quarter but fell on the road to the Glenwood Rams 73-65 on Tuesday night. Ryan Blum dropped in 14 first half points for the Rams as they forged an 11 point halftime lead. The Rams extended that lead to as large as 20 points in the third quarter and held a 50-36 lead by the end of third. The Trojans chipped away and fought back in the fourth quarter to get as close as 4 points. The Rams were able to hold on for the win with just enough efficiency at the free throw line. Glenwood finished the game 21-32 from the stripe, including 14-22 in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Blum finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. Christian Stanislav chipped in 17 for the Rams who avenged an earlier loss to the Trojans. The Rams are now 8-2 on the season and will face St. Albert at the Mid-America Center on Friday as part of the MAC Shootout.

Atlantic got 24 points from Tyler Moen and 18 from Chase Mullenix, who only had 2 in the first half. The Trojans fall to 4-7 and will host Lewis Central on Friday.

The Glenwood girls basketball team took advantage of the Atlantic Trojans 21 turnovers on their way to a 69-37 home win on Tuesday night. Glenwood opened the game up with a ten point lead by the end of the first quarter and lead 29-18 at halftime. Miscues then began to snowball in the second half with Atlantic struggling to consistently handle the Rams press. The Rams grabbed a 20 point lead by the end of the third and brought reserves in for a good chunk of the fourth quarter.

Glenwood was led by 16 points from Elle Scarborough, 11 from Madison Camden, and 10 from Brielle Smith. The Rams improved to 8-3 with the win and will next face St. Albert at the MAC Shootout on Friday night.

Atlantic was led by 11 points from McKenzie Waters and 8 from Baylee Newell. The Trojans are now 1-11 and will travel to Lewis Central on Friday.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Makai Mason is getting more aggressive on the floor for Baylor, wanting to take shots and chasing after loose balls.
Mason scored a season-high 25 points, including five free throws in the final 38 seconds, and the Bears held on for a 73-70 victory over No. 20 Iowa State on Tuesday night.

“Yeah, it’s definitely been a process,” said Mason, the first graduate transfer ever to play at Baylor. “But, every game, I’ve felt like I’ve been a little more comfortable. Just learning our system as well.”

Iowa State (12-3, 2-1 Big 12) was coming off a 17-point home win over then-No. 5 Kansas three days earlier. The Cyclones had won five in a row and entered the AP Top 25 on Monday for the first time since the end of the 2016-17 season.

“It was a tough loss, this is a loss that should bother us a lot,” Iowa State coach Steve Prohm said.

“We just wanted to build off what we did on Saturday and kind of getting off to a good start in the league,” Cyclones forward Michael Jacobson said. “Yeah, it’s just disappointing for that reason.”

Mason played only one game the past two seasons at Yale because of foot issues, and missed his first three games at Baylor with a sprained right ankle. His 25 points are still shy of his career-high 31, scored for Yale against Baylor in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

“I’m fine with whatever he does, point-wise, this year,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said with a smile.

Devonte Bandoo made two free throws with five seconds left for Baylor (9-5, 1-1), and Iowa State had one more shot to tie the game but Nick Weiler-Babb’s defended 3-pointer from about 30 feet along the right sideline wasn’t even close .

Tristan Clark added 16 points for Baylor while Bandoo had 13.

Marial Shayok had 19 points to lead Iowa State. Lindell Wigginton and Jacobson had 11 each.

Mason made a tough short jumper with 1:48 left to tie the game at 66. After his tiebreaking free throw before missing another with 38 seconds left, King McClure grabbed the offensive rebound. That set up two more free throws by Mason.

There was also Mason’s 8-0 run earlier in the second half. He made a 3 with 9:29 left for a 54-52 lead, then after an Iowa State miss made a long 3 and stood with his right arm still in the air while watching the shot go in the basket. Mason then had a long rebound and fastbreak shot, though it only counted two points since his toe was on the line.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Noah Thomas hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points and Nick McGlynn pitched in with a double-double to propel Drake to an 82-70 victory over Southern Illinois on Tuesday night.
Thomas sank three 3-pointers and scored 13 in the first half as the Bulldogs (12-4, 1-2 Missouri Valley Conference) shot 59 percent from the floor — including 8 of 16 from beyond the arc — to take a 43-22 lead into intermission. McGlynn finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. D.J. Wilkins added 15 points and five assists, while Brady Ellingson scored 14, knocking down 4 of 6 from distance.

Southern Illinois trailed 67-51 with 10:21 remaining in the game when Darius Beane hit two layups and Sean Lloyd nailed a jumper to pull the Salukis with 67-57 with 8:38 left to play. Ellingson’s 3-pointer ended the 6-0 spurt and the Bulldogs kept the lead in double digits from there.

Armon Fletcher topped the Salukis (9-7, 2-1) with 21 points off the bench on 9-of-13 shooting. Eric McGill scored 17 with six rebounds and two steals, while Kavion Pippen added 12 points, five boards, four blocked shots and three assists.

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) — Milik Yarbrough scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Phil Fayne added 19 points with seven boards, and Illinois State held off Northern Iowa 70-69 on Tuesday night.

Matt Chastain scored 12 points for the Redbirds (9-7, 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference), who trailed 33-32 at halftime but Fayne opened the second half with a basket and they never trailed again.

The Redbirds led by 10 points three different times in the second half before the Panthers rallied late, closing to 69-67 on AJ Green’s jumper with seven seconds left. Matt Hein’s made 1 of 2 from the line for a three-point lead. Green’s free throws with two seconds left closed the gap to the final score and the Panthers didn’t get off another shot.

Green scored 19 points with three 3-pointers for Northern Iowa (6-10, 1-2). Tywhon Pickford and Wyatt Lohaus added 11 points apiece and Isaiah Brown grabbed 10 rebounds.

Northwest Missouri State University sophomore and former Atlantic star Ryan Hawkins has been named the MIAA co-player of the week for his performance. Hawkins will share the honor with Lincoln’s Terrance Smith.

Hawkins (Atlantic, Iowa) averaged 26.0 points per game, 4.3 steals per game and shot 66.7 percent from the field (including 52.2 percent from 3-point range) in a trio of Northwest Missouri State victories.

Hawkins went for a career-high 31 points on 10-of-13 shooting (5-of-7 3-point FGs) in a 105-70 win at Northeastern State. Hawkins added five steals and a block while also draining all six of his free throw attempts in the Bearcats’s road victory.

He scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and chipped in with eight rebounds and two steals in a 78-67 road triumph at Central Oklahoma.

Hawkins posted a then-career-high 29 points, eight rebounds, six steals and a block in a 108-58 victory over Simpson on Dec. 30. Hawkins went 11-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range against the Storm.

He leads the MIAA in rebounding (9.9) and steals (34).

Hawkins and the Bearcats will be in action at home Wednesday against Emporia State. The women’s game will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. All members of the military and law enforcement will receive free admission for Wednesday’s doubleheader vs. Emporia State.

Atlantic travels to Glenwood tonight for a varsity basketball doubleheader and we’ll have the games on KJAN.

Glenwood will surely be motivated to take on the Trojans in the boys game. Atlantic handed them one of their two losses on the season 85-74 early in the season. The Rams are 7-2 and the Trojans have dropped 4 straight and sit at 4-6.  Glenwood has been led by 25 points per game from Christian Stanislav and have two others averaging in double figures. Atlantic has been led by Chase Mullenix’s 20 points per outing and Tyler Moen is averaging 15.

The girls contest will feature the 1-10 Trojans against the 7-3 Rams. Glenwood won the first meeting 67-39 on December 11th. The Rams were led in that win by 15 from Elle Scarborough and nearly every Ram got in the scorebook that night. The Trojans have been paced this season by 11 points per game from Haley Rasmussen, she had 8 in the first meeting.

IAWrestle dual team rankings 1/8/2019.

Iowa redshirt junior defensive end Anthony Nelson has announced his intention to enter the 2019 NFL draft.  he made the announcement on Twitter Monday.

Nelson had a standout season for the Hawkeyes with 9.5 sacks. The Waukee native finishes his career with 24 total sacks.

Nelson joins Amani Hooker and Noah Fant as Hawkeyes that have announced forgoing their remaining eligibility. Tight End TJ Hockenson is also weighing an NFL decision.

Iowa State redshirt junior receiver Hakeem Butler announced Monday afternoon that he will join teammate David Montgomery in declaring for the 2019 NFL Draft. Butler made the announcement on Twitter on Monday afternoon.

The 6-6 Butler just finished one of the best seasons at receiver in school history. He finished the year with 1,318 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was one of just 5 Iowa State receivers ever with more than 5,000 career receiving yards.

The 2019 NFL Draft will begin on April 25, 2019 in Nashville, Tennessee.
