Iowa fires volleyball coach, cooperating with NCAA

Sports

June 20th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa fired volleyball coach Bond Shymansky on Wednesday, saying an independent investigation by an outside law firm determined he committed a major NCAA rules violation. Iowa said Shymansky intentionally provided an impermissible benefit to a prospect who went on to compete for the Hawkeyes. Iowa reported the violation to the NCAA and said it is cooperating. The NCAA has asked Iowa not to comment further until it releases its findings.

“We take NCAA violations very seriously, and have acted in a fair and decisive manner,” Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said. “We will continue to work with the NCAA in regard to our self-report to reach a conclusion in this matter as swiftly as possible.”

Barta announced that Vicki Brown, who was named interim head coach last month, will remain in that role next season. Shymansky went 78-83 in five seasons at Iowa.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins. Dexter Fowler had an RBI single in the sixth for the Cardinals, who won for the seventh time in 11 games.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Brian Klein hit the tie-breaking home run for Texas Tech and the Red Raiders beat Florida State 4-1 at the College World Series to close the 40-year coaching career of NCAA all-time wins leader Mike Martin. Klein’s homer was his second of the CWS and third of the season. Martin heads into retirement with 2,029 career wins. It’s the most by any coach in any college sport. Each of his 40 teams won at least 40 games and played in the NCAA Tournament.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kumar Rocker followed up his no-hitter in super regionals with another strong start in his College World Series debut and Stephen Scott homered twice and drove in four runs in Vanderbilt’s 6-3 win over Mississippi State. The win allowed the No. 2 national seed Commodores to gain the inside track to the best-of-three finals next week. Rocker won his fifth straight start and is 9-1 over his last 10.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Louisville has eliminated Auburn from the College World Series in a 5-3 win as the two teams completed a game suspended by rain the day before. The No. 7 national seed Cardinals improved to 32-1 all-time when scoring five or more runs in an NCAA Tournament game. Auburn went 0-2 in its first CWS appearance since 1997.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa has fired volleyball coach Bond Shymansky. The Hawkeyes say an independent investigation by an outside law firm determined he committed a major NCAA rules violation. Iowa says Shymansky intentionally provided an impermissible benefit to a prospect who went on to compete for the Hawkeyes. Iowa has reported the violation to the NCAA.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR has denied Ross Chastain’s appeal after his race-winning truck was disqualified following a postrace inspection at Iowa Speedway over the weekend. National Motorsports Appeals Panelist Bryan Moss upheld the penalties assessed by NASCAR for the No. 44 being too low. NASCAR says the last time it disqualified an apparent race winner was in 1960. The decision is a major blow to Chastain’s playoff hopes in the Truck Series.

SEATTLE (AP) — Domingo Santana hit two home runs in a game for the third time this season, Marco Gonzales won his third straight start and the Seattle Mariners avoided an embarrassing series sweep with an 8-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Santana, who had five RBIs, and Daniel Vogelbach hit back-to-back homers in the first inning to give the Mariners a 4-0 lead and they went on to snap Kansas City’s three-game winning streak.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A group led by St. Louis Blues chairman Tom Stillman now owns 100 percent of the reigning Stanley Cup champions. The group has purchased the remaining shares of the team from Sports Capital Holdings, which owned the Blues from 2006-2012. The NHL Board of Governors approved the transaction at its annual June meeting in Las Vegas.

NASCAR denies Chastain appeal of disqualification at Iowa

Sports

June 19th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR denied Ross Chastain’s appeal Wednesday after his race-winning truck was disqualified following a postrace inspection at Iowa Speedway over the weekend.

National Motorsports Appeals Panelist Bryan Moss heard Chastain’s appeal and chose to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR for the No. 44 being too low. Niece Motorsports owner Al Niece had said the truck passed opening and pre-race inspections and may have suffered minor damage during the race that left it too low.
Chastain’s disqualification was the first under strict new rules put in place this season to deter cheating and it was the first time this year a winning car had been DQ’d on race day.

NASCAR said the last time it disqualified an apparent race winner was April 17, 1960, when Emanuel Zervakis’ victory at Wilson Speedway in North Carolina was thrown out because of an oversized fuel tank. The last driver stripped of a victory was Mike Skinner the day after a 1999 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway for an unapproved cylinder head.

Chastain’s misfortune gave the victory to Brett Moffitt and Chastain will be scored as if he finished last in addition to his victory and bonus points being stripped away. Chastain, who led the final 141 laps, also lost the $50,000 he had won for taking first in the “Triple Truck Challenge” marketing promotion that included the Iowa race.

The loss could be devastating to Chastain’s playoff hopes. Chastain recently decided to switch his championship pursuit this season from the Xfinity Series to trucks, but he was not allowed to count a trucks win at Kansas because he was not racing for the series title at the time. Drivers who have won races only need to finish 20th or better in the regular season to make the postseason, but Chastain now has a long way to climb.

NASCAR announced in February that thorough post-race inspections would take place at the track instead of midweek at the sanctioning body’s research and development center outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Winning teams found in violation of the rules in previous seasons were penalized with post-race fines, point deductions and/or suspensions. But drivers didn’t have victories taken away from them until Chastain was stripped of the victory.
